“Welcome to Growing Up In The 90’s, where the past is celebrated, the future is embraced, friendship is encouraged, and hatred and intolerance are unwelcome”
Welcome quote from the Growing Up In The 90’s Facebook page

The creation of one Cody Blythe, Growing Up In The 90s is a YouTube channel dedicated to keeping the past alive. Initially created by Cody to show off his Power Rangers collection, it has since expanded to include anything from the late-80’s to the early-2000’s. In 2015, after seeing his reviews of the PlayStation 1 Spider-Man game and the first Sonic the Hedgehog game, Cody brought on Spaz Attack Comms co-founder Kenny Rutter to do reviews on nostalgic video games.

Currently, the channel has these shows:

Weekly Haul – Cody shows off any items he bought from the local store, got at conventions, ordered online, or may have been donated by fans.

Nostalgic Movie Reviews – the trio give a review of a movie they either love or hate. To date, the only movie they’ve reviewed is Batman Forever, with fans asking them to review Batman And Robin next.

Nostalgic Game Reviews – Kenny reviews games from the late-80’s all the way up to 2010, though he does make some exceptions.

90’s Talk – Kenny and Cody talk about a topic from the 90’s, be it a movie, a TV show, or any other topic such as toys and video games.

You can find them here on YouTube and on Facebook.

Growing Up In The 90s would like you to remember the following tropes:

  • All There in the Manual: Kenny will often bring up information about a game found in the game’s supplementary material.
  • Aborted Arc: Batman Forever almost became this, and Kenny has cancelled a number of game reviews due to technical hiccups, taking too long, or just flat out changing his mind.
  • Angrish: Kenny and Cody devolved into this a few times during some parts of the Batman Forever review. It should be noted that Cody shamelessly loves the movie for sentimental reasons.
  • Anything but That!: Upon being told that the fans wanted them to review Batman And Robin, Cody cried in fear while Kenny put a (toy) gun to his head.
  • Ascended Extra: Kenny started off as a fan of the Facebook page. He and Cody quickly became fast friends, and he was soon made an admin for the page and main contributor for the channel.
    • The same could also be said of Orlando Steward, who joined Kenny for his review of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
  • Berserk Button: Trolls and haters for both of them, though they have different ways of dealing with them:
    • Cody calmly puts them out there for all to see
    • Kenny verbally attacks them, usually with Tranquil Fury, though he has been known to stat spewing more vitriolic comments at them.
  • Big Fun: Kenny and Cody are both quite husky and love to laugh and tell jokes.
  • Big "NO!": The response when they were asked to review Batman And Robin.
  • Blood Knight: Kenny is willing to verbally attack any and all haters despite the consequences.
  • Brick Joke: Remember Kenny’s line in the Resident Evil Remake about how Slender The Arrivals scares him? We get to see how at the start of Goosebumps: Escape From Horrorland.
    • And then there’s him being interrupted by William Shatner in DuckTales Remastered, twice. The second time, he threatens to break Shatner’s neck if he does that again.
  • Call-Back: During the Batman Forever review, a clip of Zordon is played over the scene of Bruce talking to Alfred through a wrist communicator, mimicking a scene in Kenny’s review of the second Bionicle movie (over on his main channel) where Lhikan speaks to the Matoan in a similar fashion.
    • In Power Rangers for the Sega Genesis, Kenny calls Cody. In Power Rangers Super Legends, Cody calls Kenny.
    • In South Park: The Stick of Truth, when trying to free Randy from the alien ship, Kenny yelled "This ship is run on Simon!", which was previously said in Goosebumps Escape From Horrorland when trying to free the parents and the machine was, you guessed it, run on Simon.
  • Catchphrase: They all have a few.
    • Cody: This was one of the many shows I grew up with.
      • Damn you, Kenneth Rutter! Damn you to hell!
      • Hi guys, Cody here!
    • Kenny: "Anyway", said after going off on a tangent.
      • "Here’s a fun fact", said when delivering a bit of trivia.
      • "Back to the story, it’s not hard to find", said, again, after going off on a tangent. He actually got that one from a line in the song “T-U-R-T-L-E Power”.
  • Christmas Episode: One is planned for 2016, where the two of them review the PlayStation 1 game Parasite Eve.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: Out of the two of them, Kenny seems to have the foulest mouth.
  • Companion Cube: Cody and his Batmobile – it’s the one from Batman Forever.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Cody is not only friends with a number of big name celebrities, he also works for a few of them, which has garnered almost violent jealousy from many fans.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Boy howdy, their wit can be dry at times.
  • Do Well, But Not Perfect: Kenny could care less about completing a game 100%, and is happy just playing from beginning to end.
  • Elephant in the Living Room: Addressing the accidental racism in Power Rangers during that 90’s Talk episode, as well as the passing of Christine Cavanaugh, who died almost a week before the Nickelodeon episode of 90’s Talk was recorded.
  • Epic Fail: Kenny’s shown a few in his reviews, such as the various deaths in the Crash Bandicoot games, or getting eaten by the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park: The Game.
    • And when reviewing Dino Crisis, he accidentally gets eaten during the first encounter with the T-Rex, leading to him quip "Oh God, that was embarrassing".
  • Everyone Has Standards: They don’t take kindly to anyone making a joke out of the death of someone or a tragic event such as 9/11, the latter punctuated with lines such as: “What if it was you or someone you knew in those planes or those buildings? Would you be laughing then?”
  • Fan Boy Squeal: Cody and Kenny gushed with enthusiasm when discussing Jurassic World, Goosebumps, and the Power Rangers reboot. Kenny also let one of these out when it was revealed that 24 would be coming back to TV for a short run.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Both of them are gentle, fun-loving guys, but if their reactions to trolls and haters is anything to go by, it’s probably a good idea not to piss them off.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Orlando Steward for Kenny’s review of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
  • Guide Dang It!: Kenny says that not even a guide has the right answer for the water treatment puzzle near the end of Resident Evil 3.
  • Halloween Episode: The 90’s Talk episode on the Goosebumps movie counts as one, as does Kenny’s review of Goosebumps: Escape From Horrorland and the classic Doom games.
    • Starting in 2016, he began something he’s dubbed the Halloween Spooktacular, with the original Alone in the Dark, Clock Tower, and a Doom-type game called Blood getting reviewed.
      • 2017 is dedicated to the Splatterhouse series.
  • The Hyena: Kenny admits to being easily amused. Then again, you would be too if you heard Weird Al’s Polkamon playing over the duel between Anakin and Ob-Wan.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Cody will say that Kenny is obsessed with whatever he happens to be talking about at the time. Kenny is quick to call him out on it.
Hi, Pot. Name's Kettle. Have you seen your wall lately?
  • Is This Thing Still On?: Happens from time to time during some episodes of 90’s Talk.
  • Jump Scare: A good way to bore Kenny with a horror movie or video game? Have something jump out and go “Boo”. It’s why he isn’t too fond of the Five Nights At Freddy’s series, but the lack of jumps cares is why he loves the hell out of Resident Evil and Slender The Arrival.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Kenny during the latter battles of the Sega Genesis Power Rangers game.
  • Live Episode: Cody hosts the occasional live stream on Facebook and YouTube.
  • Ludicrous Speed: The only way to describe Doomguy’s full speed.
  • Madness Mantra: Shomehow, they managed to avoid this during Batman Forever.
  • Manchild: Cody loves Power Rangers, Kenny is a brony, and both of them collect action figures and watch cartoons.
  • The Many Deaths of You: Showcased during Kenny’s reviews of the Crash Bandicoot PS1 trilogy, and before then, hilariously shown off during his review of Jurassic Park: The Game, both times set to a musical montage of Weird Al Yankovic and Brentalfloss.
  • Nice Guy: They may be snarky, foul-mouthed man children, but they are generally friendly and respectful to each other and their fans.
  • Nostalgia Filter: The point of the channel, even though Kenny – and Cody, to some extent – would like to ask everyone to remove the rose tinted glasses.
  • Not What It Looks Like: When Kenny called Cody to review Power Rangers on Sega Genesis with him, Cody was briefly seen holding his Red Ranger doll, which he quickly tossed off screen.
  • Obvious Betainvoked: One of the biggest problems Kenny has with Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), outside of the terrible story, is the fact that it’s essentially an incomplete game.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Haters and trolls will be on the receiving end of one of these should Kenny spot them making snide or hateful comments, as will some of the less than stellar games he’s reviewed, mostly licensed games such as Bionicle and Power Rangers Super Legends.
  • Running Gag: Montage Time, references from Dragon Ball Z Abridged and My Little Pony, and for a while, KHAN!
Kenny: Interrupt me again and I’ll snap your neck!
    • Also, JIM FUCKING CUMMINGS! KNEEL BEFORE JIM!
  • Shout-Out: Most are to the Nostalgia Critic, or whatever either of them happened to be reading, watching, or playing at the time. Kenny has made several mentions to the Super Gaming Brothers and Brain Scratch Commentaries.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: While they all have potty mouths, Kenny is easily the most vulgar.
  • The Smart Guy: As Kenny would say, it’s amazing what you can learn with a quick Google search.
    • He’s also got a degree in computer systems, and is working on another one for health information.
  • So You Were Saying...?: Happens sometimes in 90’s Talk when they talk over each other.
  • The Stinger: A bit of a running gag that appears at the end of some of Kenny’s reviews, complete with [Jackie Chan Adventures Uncle] interrupting the credits with “One more thing!”
  • Take That!: They like to take friendly jabs at each other, as well as Joel Schumacher, George Clooney, politicians, certain hateful members of their audience and at one point The Fine Brothers.
  • That One Level: Shiela’s escort mission in the swamp level in Spyro: Year of the Dragon led to Kenny having a mental breakdown out of pure rage, as does him failing to get a lot of boxes in Cold Hard Crash.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Once Cody says the name of the movie, we cut to Kenny laying on his bed, staring at the roof, saying how the movie gives him a headache.
  • Top Ten List: Top Ten Awesome Video Game Moments. More are planned for the future.
  • Verbal Tic: Cody pronouncing “theater” as “the-A-ter”, as well as Kenny saying “Anyway” after going off on a tangent.
  • We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties: When Cody’s old computer died on him, Kenny took over editing duties for 90’s Talk. Fans seemed to prefer Kenny’s editing style, much to his confusion.
    Kenny: How did THAT happen?
