The Annoying Orange is an animated web series hosted on YouTube, involving a talking orange who is annoying. The videos usually revolve around Orange and his friends meeting a fruit, vegetable, or some sort of Animate Inanimate Object, as Orange proceeds to heckle them to the very brink of madness, right until the character meets a sudden and grisly end.
The show is created by Dane Boedigheimer, better known on the web as Daneboe, who had, along with their company Gagfilms, previously made several videos about talking food, including some for JibJab.
The show had an immense and unexpected popularity, with his first video reaching several million views. After noticing what a hit their creation turned to be, Daneboe started posting new videos more regularly, and at present a new episode is out every Friday.
In summer 2012, The High Fructose Adventures of Annoying Orange, a TV series, premiered on Cartoon Network to successful ratings. After airing two seasons, the show went on hiatus after the second season ended in May 2014, and in December 2014 Daneboe confirmed that the series had been cancelled. A rumored third season for May 2016 did not show up.
There was a spinoff, Liam The Leprechaun, starring the eponymous Transplanted character until all of the videos on the show's YouTube account were deleted for unknown reasons. There's even a chatbot. Also, there are a couple of games: the Licensed Game Kitchen Carnage (which also has HD and Lite versions), Splatter Up! (also with free versions and Cartoon Network's Web Game Pinball.
These videos provide examples of:
- A.I. Is a Crapshoot: In the song Robot Power, Orange’s Robot 3000 short circuits itself and destroys the kitchen.
- Ambiguous Gender: The main Running Gag for the series was a question about whether Marshmallow was a boy or a girl. It stuck around for 12 years until "PRIDE" finally reveals that Marshmallow is non-binary.
- Anvil on Head: In Fortune Cookie and its "Sitcom Version" counterpart, the radish from the Misfortune Gang gets crushed by an anvil, as predicted by Miss Fortune Cookie.
- Art Shift:
- Charlie the Unicorn Gets Annoyed features a cartoon version of Orange.
- Nyan Nya Orange (Nyan Cat SPOOF) features sprite versions of Orange, Marshmallow, and Princess Butterfly Kiss.
- Annoying Orange Presents - Grapefruit's Totally True Tales: Bigfoot features a cartoon version of Grapefruit.
- Laser Pointer Hack! features a cartoon version of Orange (and of Daneboe).
- The How To videos are done in a simpler style, with still images of the characters and little animation, if any.
- Ascended Meme: The first episode of Shocktober 2023, The Fog Is Coming directly parodies the TikTok Amazing Grace horror meme (which had started with a fan-edited video of The Annoying Orange), even up to the slowed Amazing Grace song playing.
- Asshole Victim: Downplayed. A lot of the fruits that end up getting killed are incredibly unsympathetic because they show how much of a Jerkass they actually are (in comparison to Orange) before their fate. The occasional controversial celebrity comes into the series too, and either die or just constantly suffer. However, their bad side comes out usually only as a result of Orange being a jerk.
- Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever:
- One of the clips from Mystery Guest shows a nearly skyscraper-sized Orange with Eye Beams destroying a city.
- The Previously on… clips from Previously On have Marshmallow grow giant (several times larger than Orange's example above) and crash through a city while eating clouds like cotton candy.
- The Toast Busters clip from Ask Orange #2: Toast Busters! has Marshmallow be giant again—not as big as the previous instance, but still big enough to eat small skyscrapers.
- A rock candy monster, bigger than! Godzilla!
- Big Ball of Violence: Happens near the end of Gumbrawl, when the Gummy Worms, Gummy Bears, Chewing Gums and the Gumdrops get into one during a brawl, in which all of them end up getting stuck after the dust clears.
- Big Damn Heroes: In Kitchen Intruder (Bed Intruder Spoof) with AutoTune remix!, Orange is stated to have rescued Nancy Nectarine from Knife by spitting seeds at him until he left.
- Big "NO!":
- Orange at the end of More Annoying Orange when he sees that more oranges have come to annoy him.
- Orange and Pear at the end of Annoying Orange vs. FRED!!! when Fred comes to the kitchen to annoy them.
- Big "OMG!": Lemon does this in ''Wasssabi' when Orange tells him that Wassabi is here.
- Biting-the-Hand Humor: YouTube from YouTube Meets Daneboe and The Annoying Orange! being a ditz.
- Bland-Name Product: Carco from Annoying Orange vs. Gecko (Geico Spoof).
- Book Ends: With a few exceptions, the Ask Orange videos start and end with the kitchen exploding.

- Brick Joke:
- In Ask Orange #7: FUS RO DAH!, a boomerang made of boogers flies in and hits Midget Apple and Pear, much to their disgust and Orange's amusement. Then, at the end of the video, Orange responds to the last question regarding said boomerang, and suddenly it comes back and hits him too. He then admits that it is disgusting.
- In the video, SKYDIVING!, when Apple threw the chainsaw up the sky, it came back and slice him at the end.
- Bring My Brown Pants: In YouTube Meets Daneboe and The Annoying Orange!, YouTube sees Daneboe playing The Scary Maze Game and tries to get him to stop playing, claiming that Daneboe will "poop [his] pants." When Daneboe shows up again at the end of the video...YouTube: Did you, uh...did you poop your pants?Daneboe: Yeah.
- Call-Back: Quite a few of them.
- Daneboe Exposed #6: HACKED!!! has one to VCR Hack!

- Celebrity Star: Nearly every episode puts the spotlight on a new character, and most of them are voiced by Special Guests (usually fellow YouTubers).
- Censorship by Spelling: Invoked by Pear in Microwave Effect:Pear: Don't mention the K-N-I-F-E.Orange: The Kanifee? What's a Kanifee?Apple: That's knife you idiot. He's not supposed to mention the... wait a second, I'm gonna get knifed!?

- Circling Birdies:
- In The Amnesiac Orange, Orange gets circling stars after getting Easy Amnesia. Immediately afterward, two cartoon birds show up and complain that the stars are stealing their jobs. At the end of the episode, Midget Apple also gets Easy Amnesia, complete with circling stars. The birds then show up again and start beating up the stars.
- In Kung Fruit, Midget Apple, Grapefruit and Pear get circling stars after Coconut uses Kung Fruit on them.
- In Bacon Invaders (ft. Harley from WebVideo/EpicMealTime), Midget Apple gets circling stars again.
- Comically Missing the Point:

- In Ask Orange #5, Pear shuts Orange up when the latter is about to make a third CSI: Miami-esque one-liner. But after Midget Apple makes a one-liner of his own and Orange laughs, Pear disgustedly pipes out "Son of a-", before the scene freezes and the camera slowly zooms in on his face, accompanied by a portion of "Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who.
- He does it again near the end of Ask Orange #15, only this time, he is cut off by a technical difficulties screen.
- He also nearly swears in Ask Orange #14, but this time, he cuts himself off.
- A Day in the Limelight:
- Annoying Pear, which focuses on Pear taking over the annoying duties while Orange is sick.
- Annoying Marshmallow, where Orange takes a break from being annoying and Marshmallow takes his place.
- Death by Cameo: Minor characters are routinely killed, whether they're voiced by Daneboe himself or a Special Guest.
- Deface of the Moon: At the end of Close Encounters of the Annoying Kind, the Moon is given Orange's face (and it stays that way, as seen in Frankenfruit and Pear's theme song from Theme Song Attack! & The Digitour Livestream April 8th). Strangely, Orange Through Time #3: EXTENDED EDITION! shows that the Moon had its own face in 1969.
- Disney Death: Near the end of Wishful Thinking, Marshmallow is dropped into a mug of hot chocolate like in the Alternate Universe. As the others mourn their apparent demise, they suddenly emerge from the mug and compares the hot chocolate to "a hot tub full of love".
- A Dog Named "Dog": Zig-zagged. Most of the characters are named after their species, with some exceptions being Passion Fruit's sister Mandy, and a grape named Janey.
- Duck Season, Rabbit Season: Orange pulls this on Grapefruit at the beginning of KitchenMon #4: Rattle Royale!!.Grapefruit: Must I explain this to you for a thousandth time? I do not have a tiny face, I have a normal-sized face and a large body. That's a totally different deal, bro!Orange: Is not!Grapefruit: Is too!Orange: Is not!Grapefruit: Is too!Orange: Is too!Grapefruit: Is not! Wait a second...Orange: Uh oh, Grapefruit, looks like you pulled an about face! (laughs)
- Even the Subtitler Is Stumped:
- If you turn on the Closed Captions on No More Mr. Knife Guy, at around 1:45 they read "This one time, I [?] a tuna can in three seconds flat." (The missing word is "julienned.")
- If you turn on the Closed Captions on Dr. Bananas, at around 0:18 they read "Hey, something [indistinct] is going on here." (The missing word is "shady.")
- Every Episode Ending: Almost every episode ends with the fruit/thing he is annoying being cut or destroyed in some way.
- Part of the time, three seconds later he sees them as whatever new food they've been made into (Tomato into ketchup, Apples into apple pie, etc.)
- Double-Subverted in Tough Enough, with "Spike" the Durian literally being too thick-skinned to be Knifed. He Who Must Not Be Seen resorts to a crowbar (twice) and then an axe, but it's only with a pickaxe that he finally succeeds in peeling him.
- Also occasionally inverted, with things ending badly for Orange (though he never gets Knifed, permanently at least). The most Egregious instance of this is YouTube Meets Daneboe and The Annoying Orange!, which ends with YouTube injecting Orange with swine flu.
- Most, if not all of the How2 episodes end with Orange blowing up the video with TNT.
- Fantastic Racism: The titular orange absolutely hates apples to the core. No pun intended.
- "Fantastic Voyage" Plot: In one episode Orange and the other fruits are shrunk down and sent inside Nerville on a minituarized fruit cart to remove a laser that has been inplanted in his brain by the brocolli aliens. It Makes Just As Much Sense In Context.
- A Fate Worse Than Death: Cheese from A Cheesy Episode is grateful for being shredded as he won't have to hear the Orange's sour puns. It doesn't work, however, as Cheese is still alive and next to Orange even after being turned into pizza.
- Fauxshadow: The ending of Going Walnuts. Viewers will expect the previously mentioned nutcracker to be used on Walnut, but instead a squirrel shows up out of nowhere to eat him.
- Flanderization: This happened to Orange as the series progressed. As if he wasn't annoying enough, he becomes even more annoying, with constant uses of Toilet Humor, Gasshole, and TNT in addition to his usual puns.
- Foreshadowing:
- The bit of dramatic music that indicates that whatever Orange is talking to is going to get...well, you know.
- In The Exploding Orange, Kiwi is reading a newspaper with the headline Gorilla Escapes From Local Zoo. The gorilla shows up near the end of the episode to eat two bananas that had been hanging around for most of the episode as the characters of the day.
- For the Funnyz: No matter how tragic it gets, Orange will try to lighten the mood with a joke.
- Fractured Fairy Tale: In "Once Upon an Orange", Orange interferes with the endings of "The Three Little Pigs", "Jack and the Beanstalk", and "Hansel and Gretel".
- The Storytime series is about Pear trying to read a book, usually a fairy tale while Orange changes the story here and there.
- Freeze-Frame Bonus:
- Orange's appearances in some of Daneboe's other videos.
- All of the Mustachios' appearances (except in Mystery of the Mustachios).
- The "If you saw this, type ______ in the comments!" annotations.
- Fully Automatic Clip Show: 1 BILLION KILLS!, a Death Montage.
- Funny Fan Voice: Orange speaks into a fan to imitate Darth Vader in Viral Vote and Rolling in the Dough.
- Fun with Acronyms: At the end of SHOUT OUT SUNDAY: Episode 14, Orange points out that Brittani Louise Taylor's initials are 'BLT! Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato!'
- Fusion Dance: Zoom and Zip combining their fluids creates Zoop. But if all three try to combine with each other, the sheer extremity of the energy drinks will prove too much for the world to handle.
- Furry Confusion:
- iPhones are sentient in Orange gets Autotuned and YouTubers but appear to be non-sentient in Back to the Fruiture and iPhone App makes popcorn!
- Gummy worms are sentient in Gumbrawl - Extended Version, but Orange had previously been shown eating one in a clip from Mystery Guest.
- One of Orange's best friends is a marshmallow, but the early episode Luck o' the Irish has Orange mention that marshmallows make him gassy.
- YouTube Meets Daneboe and The Annoying Orange! has the eponymous YouTube eating a non-sentient (or possibly just dead) banana before and during his encounter with Orange.
- All over the place in Epic Peel Time.
- Gassy Gastronomy: The cartoon features countless examples of this, but a more prominent one being "Hot Sauce Challenge" where Midget Apple burps every time he eats chicken wings and is told by Grapefruit to put the hot sauce on something that doesn't make him burp, to which Midget Apple puts it on a burrito and subsequently propels himself into the air with a fiery fart.
- Got Me Doing It:
- In Plants vs Zombies: Mini Game #10, Midget Apple accidentally calls himself Midget Apple instead of Little Apple.Midget Apple: AAUGH! I called myself a midget! Oh, no...oh, I'm a victim of my own crimes...
- In Annoying Orange 2.0!!!, Midget Apple almost calls himself Midget Apple instead of Little Apple again.
- In Plants vs Zombies: Mini Game #10, Midget Apple accidentally calls himself Midget Apple instead of Little Apple.
- Groin Attack:
- In The Viral Video Kit, the eponymous kit includes an entire collection of groin shots.Announcer: See guys get hit in the nuts with baseballs, footballs, garbage cans, toilets, manhole covers, and the Annoying Orange!Orange: Whoa! That was nuts!
- In The Leprechaun Trap, the "shoehorn" does this to Liam the Leprechaun.
- In The Viral Video Kit, the eponymous kit includes an entire collection of groin shots.
- Guns Akimbo: One of the Previously on… clips from Previously On (glimpsed in Spudow Rocket! - DANEBOEVLOG) has Orange firing a pair of machine guns at a robot.
- Hair-Trigger Temper: The titular protagonist of the episode, Angry Orange, who, unlike most of the obnoxious, fun-loving oranges depicted in the series, is a serious, short-tempered Jerkass who despises Orange and Captain Obvious.
- Halloween Episode: There's at least one Halloween video every year.
- 2009: Plumpkin
- 2010: Frankenfruit and Annoying Orange: Frankenfruit OUTTAKES
- 2011: Chiller (with free MP3!!!)
- 2012: TV of Terror
- Hiccup Hijinks: The Exploding Orange reveals that if a fruit has the hiccups for too long, they explode. Then Orange gets the hiccups...
- Hilarious Outtakes: A few outtake videos are set "behind the scenes", but most actually are set behind the scenes.
- Historical Longevity Joke: Orange loves making jokes about Grandpa Lemon's age.
- In "The Day The Store Stood Still" Grandpa Lemon is recounting a story that involves the beginning of the universe, Orange adds "you were in preschool".
- Subverted in "Founding Fruits" where Orange jokes Grandpa Lemon only knew the history of the fruit version of the American Revolution because he was alive during that time, only to be shocked when Grandpa Lemon reveals he was indeed alive back then and is actually the still living Benjamin Franklemon, making him over 200 years old.
- Human Cannonball: Well, not human, but Midget Apple gets shot out of a cannon in Naval Orange.
- Humans Are Cthulhu: Almost every episode ends with the orange's victim being cut up and served—or otherwise being horrifically and uncontrollably removed—by a human (Daneboe, possibly playing himself)
- In-Character Let's Play: The Annoying Orange gaming channel features the cast of the series playing actual games as their respective characters.
- Insistent Terminology:
- It's Little Apple, not Midget Apple!
- The Mustachios from Mystery of the Mustachios are Mustachios, not Pistachios!
- Interquel: Liam The Leprechaun - Liam Vs. Grapefruit! (Characters From The Annoying Orange!) is set immediately after Luck o' the Irish.
- Interspecies Romance:
- Between Cantaloupe and Balloon from The Amnesiac Orange...until Balloon pops.
- Marshmallow's parents are a unicorn and a marshmallow, respectively revealed in Mommy and Me and the High Fructose Adventures episode "Marshmalia".
- Joke and Receive: In Naval Orange, Orange calls Captain Blueberry Beard by his real name without meaning to.
- Jump Scare: Happens quite a few times in the series, especially in the yearly Shocktober videos. In fact, there is a trilogy of these videos literally titled "Jump Scare".
- Leitmotif: There are two—Marshmallow's, which is a cheerful piano tune (sometimes used without him, especially in Flashbacks), and the dramatic music that plays when someone is being chopped up by Knife.
- Let's Play:
- Kitchen Carnage: Annoying Orange video game! and Kitchen Carnage 1.1: Annoying Update! are LPs of the Licensed iOS Game Annoying Orange: Kitchen Carnage by Daneboe himself.
- Plants vs Zombies: Mini Game #10 is Midget Apple's LP of the Plants vs. Zombies mini-game "Big Trouble Little Zombie."

- Can happen to Grape in Cartoon Network's Web Game Annoying Orange Pinball.
- Medium Awareness: During the silent, subtitled portion of Liam The Leprechaun - Passionfruit's World Peace (Starring iJustine & Daneboe!), Liam points out that "everything we say gets translated into these giant letters down here!"
- Mood Whiplash: In Ask Orange #88, one of the questions claims that the voices in the asker's head are getting louder. Orange asks "Louder than this?!" before playing in a One-Man Band… before he suddenly stops and seriously tells the asker to see professional help.
- My Sister Is Off-Limits: Orange really does not like it when people try to date his sister.
- Naked People Are Funny: Nude Dude is the one of the few apples who gets along with Orange. True to his name, he is completely without his peel, and this is played for comedy with other fruits even considering him naked.
- One-Steve Limit:
- Averted due to the characters' Species Names.
- Also averted in the crossovers, which have involved two different Charlies— Charlie the Drunk Guinea Pig and Charlie the Unicorn.
- Photo Comic: The official site's AOComix are made using screenshots from Annoying Orange videos.
- Previously on…:
- Liam The Leprechaun - Liam Vs. Grapefruit! (Characters From The Annoying Orange!) (the first episode of Liam's spinoff) opens with a clip from Luck o' the Irish (Liam's first Annoying Orange appearance).
- Previously On opens with a series of clips supposedly from previous Annoying Orange episodes.
- Product Placement:

- In Angry Birds 33: Snorkle Burps, Angry Birds #34: EWWW GROSS!!!, Angry Birds 35: I'm better now, and Angry Birds #37: GIANT BIRDS!!!, one of the files on Dane's desktop is "AO Party Rock.zip"—Party Rock (ft. DeStorm) wouldn't be released until 26 to 18 days later.
- In Angry Birds #41: Glitch in the Matrix!!!, one of the files on Dane's desktop is "Epic Rap Battle Guide Track.mp4"—Epic Rap Battles Of Kitchenry (ft. NicePeter) wouldn't be released until 6 days later.
- Punctuated! For! Emphasis!:
- "YOU KILLED MY BROTHER!!!" (Grapefruit's sister, in Grapefruit's Revenge)
- "ZOOM! Can't! Hold it! Any! Longer!" (ZOOM Energy Drink, in ZOOM!!!)
- Reality-Breaking Paradox: Daneboe divides five by zero on a calculator in a Flashback from Daneboe Exposed #9: Daneboe Apocalypse. It causes an Earth-Shattering Kaboom.
- Reality Is Unrealistic: According to Orange, anyway; in the episode Teenage Mutant Ninja Apples, Orange doesn't believe in green apples, much to the Green Apple's chagrin.
- Recap Episode: Equals Annoying Orange (Equals Three Spoof) has Orange review Sneezing Marshmallow (Sneezing Baby Panda Spoof), Orange After Dentist (David After Dentist Spoof), Kitchen Intruder (Bed Intruder Spoof) with AutoTune remix! and Annoying Orange meets Charlie the Unicorn (Spoof) (the past four Orange viral video spoofs) in the style of =3.
- Revenge of the Sequel: Grapefruit's Revenge (not featuring Grapefruit, as this was before he came Back from the Dead).
- Running Gag:
- Midget Apple insisting his name is Little Apple.
- Grandpa Lemon falling asleep at random times.
- A sort of out-of-universe example: the "If you saw this, type ______ in the comments!" annotations.
- Jokes towards Marshmallow's gender were one for a long time, until it was revealed there non-binary in 2022, putting an end to it.
- Dr.Bananas and his many attempts at restoring Grapefruits original voice.
- Cory finding new backsides to replace his old one, only for it to get destroyed.
- Rage Breaking Point: If there's a gaming episode based on a rage game, there will be this trope, featuring whoever played it throw an absolutely destructive fit.
- Shoot the Rope: In "Spaghetti West", Al Dente's bullet ricochets off Orange's sheriff's badge and cuts through the noose around Pear's neck.
- Shoot the Shaggy Dog: Every single victim in this series (that didn't bring it upon themselves) suffers through some sort of hindrance (usually from Orange but also from their own stupidity or jerkass behavior) after accomplishing essentially nothing throughout the episode... beyond either being another one of Orange's victims or generally failing at their own life. There are occasions where the victim is usually immensely egotistical, however, and so it's a case of reveling in their accomplishments too much before they are inevitably killed.
- Shout-Out
- One episode parodies FPS Russia
- Stock Shout-Out: In April Fruits Day, after it's revealed that Orange is really Midget Apple after his costume gets deflated by Knife:Midget Apple: And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for that pesky Knife!
- The episode "Sailor Spoon" parodies the original Sailor Moon series, and features silverware versions of Moon (Spoon), Mercury (Sporkury), Jupiter (Scoopiter) and Tuxedo Mask (Tuxedo Flask), while the villain Queen Nyquil has the same colour scheme as Queen Beryl.
- Sick Episode: Annoying Pear, which focuses on Pear taking over the annoying duties while Orange is sick.
- Special Guest: Even excluding the frequent appearances by other YouTubers, we still have the members of Weezer as the Bonsai Tree & Party Platter from Wazzup 3: Bonsai Tree, James Caan as Jalapeño from Jalapeño, and John Leguizamo as Jumping Bean from Jumping Bean (ft. John Leguizamo) and U Can't Squash This (U Can't Touch This Spoof).
- Spinoff:
- The Annoying Orange could be considered a spinoff of Gagfilms.
- Liam the Leprechaun, sort of—the character predates Annoying Orange, but the series is considered an AO spinoff.
- Grapefruit has his own channel too, though no videos have been uploaded to it yet.
- Stating the Simple Solution: Ask Orange #71: Orange is the Impostor! has Pear brace himself for another load of objects to be dropped on him... only for Orange to point out via another comment that he should simply move aside when it happens. So Pear does so, avoiding the 10 million Lego bricks that were originally going to be dropped, and celebrates... until he realizes that he's standing on a marked red X, where multiple anvils are to be dropped. You can guess what happens next.
- Stopped Numbering Sequels:
- At first, the regular episodes were numbered, with specials being unnumbered. After Passion of the Fruit, the regular episodes dropped the numbering, blurring the line between regular episodes and specials.
- After Wazzup 3: Bonsai Tree, the Wazzup sub-series dropped its numbering as well.
- Strictly Formula: A new character is introduced to the kitchen, Orange annoys the new character, then the new character gets killed.
- Stylistic Suck: In 101 Dalmatians, Orange takes over as animator after the original animator for the Story Time segments quit. The result — the background looks like it's from Microsoft Paint, a bunch of dancing babies are added, Cruella de Vil is turned into a cube, and the puppies are turned into a giant horse/dalmation hybrid.
- Temporary Scrappy: The episode "More Annoying Orange" has the titular More Annoying Orange, who is so nerve-grating that he annoys the original Annoying Orange. At the end, More Annoying Orange gets cut up and is made into orange juice, ..but then six more annoying oranges are brought in.
- There Is No Kill Like Overkill: When a character is being chopped by Knife, dramatic music plays, Knife cuts the fruit in a way of slaughtering, and ''fruit juice representing blood'' sprays out of the cut fruit.
- They Killed Kenny Again: On very rare occasions, the main characters have suffered brutal deaths of their own. They obviously come back alive in the following episode.
- This Explains So Much: In Introduction To "Ultimate Dog Tease" (when Marshmallow and Midget Apple have just watched Bizkit the Sleep Walking Dog):Marshmallow: Yay! I love Bizkit!Midget Apple: You think Bizkit's gonna be okay after bashing his head against the wall?Marshmallow: Ooh! I love bashing my head against the wall!Midget Apple: That explains a lot, actually.
