Mermaid Memories is a YouTube web series crated by AliceLPS made with Littlest Pet Shop toys.

It tells the story of a girl named Hannah. One day, while drawing at the beach, she comes across a girl named Opal. Upon coming closer, she realizes that Opal is a mermaid. The two become quick friends, and Hannah agrees for Opal to stay at her house. Eventually, Opal goes to her school, where she meets Gabriella, her best friend Ashley, and her brother Noah. All seems to be well, until the villainous Parent-Child Team Villia and Kiara come into play...

The series began on April second, 2016 and concluded on January fifth, 2019. You can watch all twelve episodes of it here.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguously Gay: Opal wasn’t interested in marriage with Prince Mist, and becomes Heterosexual Life-Partners with Kiara. Word of God would later remove the “ambiguous” part.
  • Ambiguously Related: Since Villia is actually a Fusion and one of her components is Opal’s sister, her child Kiara could arguably be Opal’s niece. Their biological relationship is never acknowledged.
  • Babies Ever After: Hannah and Noah have a kid together in the future.
  • Big Bad: Villia. Although the series finale reveals that “Moon” would be more accurate.
  • Camp Straight: After coming to the surface, Mist acts very campy. But the entire reason he went to the surface was to get with Opal. Later, he marries Gabriella.
  • Christmas Special: A non canon Christmas special was released in 2016.
  • Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: Each of the main character’s mermaid tails are a different color.
  • Damsel in Distress:
    • Hannah is this in the sixth episode.
    • Opal is this starting in episode eight until episode twelve.
  • Distant Finale: The series finale takes five years after the events of the series.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: Villia, whose name is villain with the a and i switched and without the n, is the antagonist of the series.
  • FauxShadowing: There’s a lot of build up to Mist and Hannah becoming a couple, but this is never fulfilled.
  • Fish out of Water: An almost literal example with Opal and Mist. Opal adjusts to land maid life very quickly, but Mist is completely lost.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • The grey and black cat are seen long before their official introductions.
    • Opal is uncomfortable with Hannah joking about rich kids, because she’s more than just rich; she’s a princess!
    • The theme song shows Villia and the grey cat and Opal and the black cat flashing between each other foreshadowing that they fuse into each other.
    • The grey cat and Villia have the same fur pattern. This is because the grey cat is half of Villia.
  • Furry Lens: Averted. Since everyone in the series is an animal, the non-mermaid characters were called “land maids” instead of humans.
    • However, in the first episode, Hannah mentions about being a "human", though that is technically a script error.
  • Fusion: Opal becomes trapped in one in episode eight. It’s also revealed that Villia is a fusion.
  • Halfway Plot Switch: In the first six episodes, Hannah is the main character, and it’s mostly about Opal trying to remain on land. The last six episodes have Opal as the main character and mostly focus on the mermaid world.
  • Happy Ending: Hannah and Noah have Babies Ever After. Prince Mist and Gabriella marry and rule their part of the sea together. Marine is finally free after virtually a lifetime of imprisonment and is crowned Queen. Because of that, Opal now longer has to worry about ruling and gets to live the life she always wanted (a simple life) with her partner, Kiara. Moon and the black cat will spend the rest of their lives in jail. The closest thing to a sad ending here is that the character’s that aren’t living with each other have gone their own separate ways, but even then, all of them seem okay with that.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Kiara abandons her mother and joins the good guys in episode six.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Kiara and Opal move in together, and later run a jewelry shop together. Word of God would later confirm they are a couple.
  • Hide Your Lesbians: All the heterosexual characters are explicitly stated to be together in the Distant Finale, yet Kiara and Opal were only confirmed through Word of God.
  • Humanity Ensues: While Opal and Mist don’t technically become "human", it functions like this trope. Opal trips when trying to walk for the first time and Mist has no idea how to live in the world of land maids.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: Opal hates her life as a princess because she doesn’t feel free.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Opal being a princess.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • The antagonist of the series is named Villia.
    • The grey cat’s name is revealed to be Marine. Very fitting for a mermaid!
  • Missing Mom: Opal’s mother died when she was just a baby.
  • Origins Episode: Episode five discusses Opal’s past life as a princess and why she abandoned her kingdom.
  • Parent-Child Team: Kiara and Villia are this until episode six.
  • Pretty Princess Powerhouse: Opal is considered to be a beautiful princess, but she also knows lots of magic spells.
  • Prince Charmless: Mist insults Opal’s fascination with land maids and only cares about marrying for the joining of their kingdoms. It’s lampshaded by Opal who calls this “charming.” When he returns to land, he’s a clueless Hopeless Suitor.
  • The Reveal: Villia was a Fusion and one of her components was Opal’s sister.
  • Rebellious Princess: Opal wasn’t interested in ruling or marriage and wanted adventure with land maids.
  • Save the Princess: Opal is a princess and the goal of episodes nine through twelve is to save her. Another goal was to save the grey cat, who was also a princess.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Opal and her mother are both Siamese cats with green eyes and a green mermaid tail.
  • Stumbling in the New Form: Opal trips upon trying to walk for the first time.
  • Title Drop: In the series finale, Opal refers to the events of the series as a mermaid memory.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Gabriella and Hannah were best friends until Gabriella became rich and abandoned her for the other rich and popular girls at school.
  • Wham Line: The last line of episode two reveals Opal is a princess.
