Okay, we're fucking writing a fucking page describing Mario Teh fucking Plumber, and we're gonna start with the most important fucking thing of the fucking post: the character design!

MarioTehPlumber is the persona of John Engel, a YouTube user who used to mostly rant on Sonic the Hedgehog games, before changing his focus to modern Nintendo games. He is known for having No Indoor Voice, constantly swearing, biased "reviews" and caring more for the character design of a game than the actual gameplay.

He also has an intense hatred of anything that has attracted a huge Rule 34 following, and often mislabels otherwise-clean characters as "Hentai", whether they got this through popularity or questionable infamy among the character's fandom. This includes Rosalina, any female from Fire Emblem, the Inklings of Splatoon, and Linkle from Hyrule Warriors Legends.

In early 2015, he released several videos claiming that all along he was a troll, and that while he does believe some of what he says, he almost always exaggerates his opinions.

In 2016, he stopped uploading videos and changed a huge amount after starting to like Yo-kai Watch, and made a video explaining his long absence from YouTube. He made his full return in 2018, going back to his old behavior after a while before quietly stopping production again. He briefly returned in 2022 to cover Sonic Frontiers before History Repeats. During this period, he appeared from time to time on his friend TheBalishChannel's live streams, and continues to do so.

He once again made his grand return in October 2023, revealing that he is now the husband of a user named "Missleafgamer". Shortly after he returned to YouTube as well. His current persona is an exaggerated take on his past self.

MarioTehPlumber fucking features fucking examples of the following fucking tropes:

• Accentuate the Negative: He admitted in his early 2015 videos that a lot of the opinions he presents are extremely exaggerated. He genuinely dislikes Sonic's post-Sonic Adventure design, but not to the Unstoppable Rage levels he displays in his videos.
• All Anime Is Naughty Tentacles: He calls pretty much anything with an anime art style Hentai.
• And There Was Much Rejoicing: His favorite part of Sonic Adventure 2 was Shadow's death.
• Artistic License – History: In his Sonic Rush "review", he blames "green-eyed Sonic" for Sega exiting the console market in the early 2000s. It was actually because of the consecutive financial failures of the Saturn and Dreamcast.
• Ass Shove: He frequently accuses anybody who isn't bothered by Sonic's post-Sonic Adventure design of "liking to shove his Hentai quills up their asses". Never mind the fact that Sonic is still a hedgehog which would result in an extremely painful experience. Or that Sonic is a fictional character.
• Atomic F-Bomb: Drops either this or a Cluster F-Bomb (or both) whenever he gets really pissed. Here's a demonstration.
• Author Catchphrase:
  • "Okay, I'm gonna fucking do a fucking review of fucking [name of game], and I'm gonna start with the most important fucking aspect: the character design".
  • Whenever he "reviews" a game that hasn't come out yet (Which is mostly all the time these days) or exists (Pokémon Z), he'll usually say something along the lines of: "You don't need to play this game to review it."
  • "This game gets a -69 out of 10."
  • "WHAT THE FUCK!?"
• Berserk Button:
  • He despises the modern design of Sonic that first appeared in Sonic Adventure and almost every subsequent game that features it. Pretty much all of his earlier content was devoted to ruthlessly slamming said games, and even after he shifted gears toward Nintendo, Modern Sonic-centric videos were still quite frequent.
    • This was averted for his Sonic Frontiers (i.e. "Sonic fucking Front-butt-fuck-tiers") review in 2022, in which he gave the game a 9/10 despite containing the Modern "Hentai" Sonic. He praised the title for being a step in the right direction for the franchise.
  • He hates most modern Nintendo characters, especially female ones. This includes characters like Rosalina, Palutena, Lucina, and Linkle. He tends to call them all "Hentai" characters due to the huge "waifu" and Rule 34 followings they all have.
    • He hates Splatoon. Specifically, he hates the Inklings due to similar followings they have to the aforementioned modern female Nintendo characters.
    • He hates characters that can be both male or female, such as Robin and Corrin. This is also part of the reason why he hates Link's Distaff Counterpart Linkle so much.
  • He hates anybody who likes anything that he doesn't, such as modern Sonic and/or modern Nintendo.
  • Mockery and ridicule is a BIG one for him. Any comment towards him with even the slightest amount of snark will make him absolutely furious.
• Bias Steamroller: To say his "reviews" are extremely biased would be an Understatement, as he spends more time bashing anything he perceives to even remotely appeal to one's sexuality (even if it isn't supposed to) than discussing the gameplay. Combine that with his failure to do research (e.g. mis-blaminginvoked "green-eyed Sonic" for Sega exiting the console market after the Dreamcast), and it's no wonder viewers frequently ask, "Does this guy even play a game before he reviews it?" Then again, he is a troll.
• Broke the Rating Scale: He gives most games that he "reviews" a negative score, most commonly -69/10.
• Broken Pedestal: He used to worship Nintendo like gods, praising everything they put out and saying every other game company sucks. Now he hates their guts.
• The Bully: He's been known for stalking and berating anyone who would speak out against him. In some cases, this has gone as far as trying to make sure the accounts of these people are banned.
• By "No", I Mean "Yes": He's known for thinking the character design is more important than the gameplay in any video game, but his Sonic Adventure 2 "review" has it seem that this time, he'll discuss the gameplay before discussing the character design. It doesn't happen. He fleetingly talks about the opening cutscene which isn't gameplay, and right after that, he starts bashing the character design.
• Can't Take Criticism: A few of his videos were made of him yelling at people for thumbing down his videos and criticizing him.
• Censored for Comedy: His rant against the Game Grumps has any mention of the group's or their members' names censored out, for some reason.
• Cluster F-Bomb: His default mode of speaking.
  • Somewhat averted for his Sonic Frontiers review, which still having the F-bombs, has all uses of homosexual slurs bleeped. In John's words:
    John: There's some certain words that I can't say anymore that's against the Community Guidelines for YouTube, 'cause everybody's a fuckin' pussy these days. (mocking tone) That's right, those words offend you, don't they?
  • Even then, the video still managed to get age restricted for the F-bombs anyway.
• Country Matters: Uses the word "Cunt" somewhat frequently in his videos.
• Disproportionate Retribution: One time he threatened to bomb Sega's offices over rumors that Classic Sonic would have a Werehog form in Sonic Generations (which of course turned out to be false).
• Early-Installment Weirdness: Some of his earliest "reviews" don't begin with his Author Catchphrase, "Okay, I'm gonna fucking do a fucking review of fucking [name of game], and I'm gonna start with the most important fucking aspect of the game: the character design".
• Fan Hater:
  • He doesn't just hate certain games, he hates the fans of those games too.
  • Back when he used to rant about Sonic, he called fans of the games "Modern Morons" although he always used "Moran" instead of "Moron" for some reason.
• First Installment Winsinvoked: For someone calling himself "the number-one Sonic fan", he only really likes the first game. He has gone on record as saying that no Sonic game—past, present or future—will ever be as good as Sonic 1.
• Freeze-Frame Bonus: Many of his newer videos feature images that only appear for less than a second.
• Freud Was Right: He has a tendency to see sexual symbolism in just about everything and will angrily point it out whenever possible. For example, his Sonic Adventure 2 "review" features him referring to the Egg Walker's spring-loaded boxing glove as a "boxing-gloved dick", as well as calling the Final Biolizard a "huge dick connected to the ARK".
  • A major contributor to his hatred for Sonic's redesign is his longer quills, which he has referred to as "Hentai quills which you guys like to shove up your asses".
• A God Am I: He tends to, repeatedly, address himself as the "embodiment of gaming itself". If anyone is ever playing any game ever, it, supposedly, represents him. If anyone attempts to play against him, they are, supposedly, destined to lose.
• Green-Eyed Monster: He absolutely LOATHES Game Grumps and believes that he deserves the popularity and fandom they have.
• Have a Gay Old Time:
  • He often refers to anything and anybody that rouses his anger, whether they be character/game design choices or people who conflict with his views, by using words like "gay", "retarded" and "faggots" as insults to mean "stupid" or "idiots". He has also used "Autism" for the same thing as well.
  • However, YouTube's community guidelines have gotten more stricter since his last video in 2019, so when he returned to YouTube in 2022, the homophobic slurs were bleeped out on his Sonic Frontiers review.
• He-Man Woman Hater:
  • Thinks about any female character that exists are purely sex objects and nothing more. The same goes for female gamers and women in general as he often states that they are automatically inferior to men. In one video, he deleted some Miiverse comments by people in one video who were saying that he was sexist.
  • Even after his return in 2023 his opinions are still valid, but he excludes his wife from it and instead brags about her to anyone.
• Hypocrite:
  • He often insists that those who enjoy current Nintendo are social rejects with mental disabilities. Though he may certainly hate current Nintendo with a passion, his accusations would carry a bit more weight if it weren't for his anger issues, narcissism, and obsessive behavior patterns that make him sound and act more like the people he derides than the people themselves.
  • He is completely incapable of handling criticism or even disagreement of any kind, but he sees nothing wrong with him making personal attacks against his own viewers that criticise or disagree with his views. To quote his "Stop Defending Modern Sonic" video as an example:
    John: Don't defend this motherfucking green-eyed fucking bullshit! This guy is just fucking retarded, he looks fucking gay, his arms and legs are like fucking noodles, and he's the fucking green-eyed, fucking ugly Hentai quills that you guys want to shove up your ass. Well, guess what? You guys are quillfucking fucking freaks that fucking like fucking quills up your fucking ass all day, you fucking quillfuckers!
• Insane Troll Logic: Being a literal internet troll, this is to be expected. Besides his strong hatred for anything that might even remotely resemble sexual imagery (intended or unintended) however, MarioTehPlumber infamously has a habit of calling Knuckles the N-word. Why? Knuckles' levels in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 feature Hip-Hop music in their soundtracks. Hip-hop was developed by African- and Latino-Americans in the 1970s, and the genre is usually associated with black artists as it's a source of ethnic pride, but calling a fictional anthropomorphic echidna from a children's video game franchise the N-word over hip-hop music being used in their levels, is about as illogical as you can get. Unsurprisingly, MarioTehPlumber was quickly decried as a racist because of this.
• Jerkass: In spades. He's arrogant, ignorant, childish, and threatens and abuses a great deal of anyone who comes in contact with him. There's a great chance that anybody who doesn't kiss the ground he walks on has encountered his prickish behavior at least once.
• Jerkass Has a Point: As decreed by Rule 34, there is indeed a minority of people who make Hentai—or at least NSFW—Fan Art of Sonic and co. on sites like DeviantArt. Those in question have been ridiculed by Sonic fans and non-Sonic fans alike. Nevertheless, his rants on "quillfuckers" aren't entirely unfounded, though his point would have more merit if he didn't group all modern Sonic fans together and generalise them as "Hentai faggots".
• Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: He sees himself as being the best gamer in the world and suggests to anyone who disagrees to lower their egos. Even in videos that are meant to be about how thankful he is for his followers, he can't drop his ego long enough to make any of it sound genuine.
  • His milestone video is one example as his monologue starts off seeming sweet until he starts blabbing about how much better he is at games than everyone else in the world. Including said fans of his videos that he compares to ants.
  • In fact, a tweet from December 2018 says it all. He first wishes everyone a Merry Christmas, then goes on to say he's better than everyone else at every video game.
    John: I updated my description with the most accurate summary to my gaming accomplishments thats defines me as a gaming legend. Thats right the champ did it big this year. Consider it an honor you are reading this tweet while you lower your fucking ego to my greatness.
  • Another example from a July 2021 tweet, where he says that Balish is the only good friend to compare against and that they should be jealous of him.
    John: I want to thank @BalishChannel for this wonderful package of awesome gifts. There is no person on this earth that is a better friend than Balish has been towards me, nobody can compare. I want all you jealous fucks to know I never expected a free Xbox Series X I'm better than you
• Know-Nothing Know-It-All: And how? Yes, he does have a certain level of knowledge regarding his interests but the other half of the time he coins up "critiques" and "facts" about newer games, their fans, and companies purely out of harsh assumptions. And please don't even try to consult him about how autism actually works...
• Manchild: In his twenties though his immature speech patterns and personality do little to show that.
• The Nicknamer: He often creates derogatory nicknames for characters and games that he hates, mostly with swear words.
• No Indoor Voice: He is notoriously loud, sometimes to the point of Sensory Abuse. His Sonic Adventure 2 "review" in particular consists of screaming into the microphone throughout the entire video.
  John: (Animalistic roar) FUCK! WHY, SEGA, WHY?! WHY DID YOU HAVE TO MAKE THIS FUCKING GAME—IT FUCKING SUCKS—FUCKING QUILLFUCKERS, AND FUCKING RUIN THE FUCKING FRIGGING SONIC FUCKING SERIES AND THE WHOLE FUCKING FRANCHISE?!? I MEAN, THIS IS THE BIGGEST FUCKING DRAGON BALL Z FUCKING RIPOFF EVER! THIS GAME FUCKING SUCKS! IT'S THE WORST FUCKING GAME IN THE FUCKING WHOLE SONIC FRANCHISE! IT'S FUCKING... GAY, RETARDED, AND FOR FUCKING FEGGITS! NOW LET'S GET STARTED WITH THIS FUCKING REVIEW!
• Poe's Law: His videos are extremely over-the-top and riddled with ridiculously biased viewpoints, but the Sonic franchise's notoriously vocal Broken Base meant that in his earlier years on YouTube, a sizable portion of viewers didn't realise that he is a troll and took him seriously.
• Politically Incorrect Villain: Many of his rants include racist, sexist, homophobic, and ableist slurs directed at anyone who even slightly disagrees with him. He also thinks that women exist solely as sex objects, and that only the mentally challenged would like Nintendo (despite it being a multi-billion dollar empire).
• Psychopathic Manchild: The number of videos where he isn't screaming into his microphone over the most trivial things imaginable or throwing around and/or breaking stuff can be counted on one hand.
• Pun: Since 2013, he has been giving nicknames to characters or games are puns that mix the name of the character or name with vulgar terms. Examples include: "Sonic Lost Dicks", "Dickhead Toad's Treasure Fucker", "Sonic Forskin" and "Princess Bitch: Ho-time". As for characters, there's the "Pussylina and Dildo" term he used to describe Rosalina and Luma in the Smash Talk video.
• "The Reason You Suck" Speech: To games and E3 demos he hates as well as their fans.
• Sensory Abuse: A lot of his speech is indecipherable due to him speaking or screaming so close to his microphone that it only renders what he's saying as loud buzzing.
• The Stinger: Happens quite a bit, although a proper example of this is at the end of his Super Mario RPG remake review:
  John: (copies Wario's voice) WAHAHAHAAAA!!! WARIO! (goes back to normal voice) Wha... what?! I mean... why does someone even say their fucking name when they're doing this shit like... Wahahahaha!!! Mariotehplumber! like... the fuck of it only makes sense?
• Sir Swears-a-Lot: Swears constantly, to the point where some of his videos were made age-restricted because of it.
• Skewed Priorities:
  • Insists that the character design is the most important aspect of a video game, and almost always talks about the character design before talking about the gameplay in any "review" he makes, usually by outright saying "Let's begin with the most important aspect — the character design", or some variation on those words.
  • Subverted in his Sonic Adventure 2 "review", where he says "Now let's get to the gameplay" and actually starts talking about the game's opening without mentioning the character design... only to almost immediately swerve off into talking about—you guessed it—the character design. This mock commentary says it all.
    RickyRay102: So when you say gameplay, I assume you mean character design.
• Small Name, Big Ego: Often addresses himself as "the best video gamer in the world" despite the fact he's never done any actual game tournaments to prove his skills against those who may better fit the title. He also believes that his commentary is somehow reaching the Nintendo and SEGA officials despite the fact they are likely busy people who would be quicker to consult the criticisms of actual reviewers and business figures first rather than some random fan with a moderately decent following and bad reputation.
• Strictly Formula: Once a major punching bag among The Commentary Community, many commentators eventually stopped making commentaries on his videos because of this. His videos are extremely formulaic, bashing the character design in video games and swearing excessively Ad Nauseam, until the commentators ran out of things to say to him that hadn't already been said. Eventually, he was written off as a troll.
• Suddenly Shouting: This happens a lot, an example from "One last time I am telling you":
  John: and you fucking faggits have a problem with this? well too bad! I can call YouTube and get my channel back, because they have proof of why I do what I do. And... YOU... can not do anything about it... I'M HERE FOREVER MOTHERFUCKERS!!!
• Tantrum Throwing: There is one video where he is complaining about the modern Sonic games and he shows himself on camera in which he tosses of what appears to be a box of legos, a chair and flipping his couch over in a fit of rage. He also did a video ranting on Game Grumps in the same basement, which ended with him destroying a lamp and flipping over the couch again.
• They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:invoked He hates most changes that come to long running franchises, most notably the "modern" redesign of Sonic.
• Troll: Nowadays, he's been accepted to have been one, but in his early years, there were a lot more people who took him seriously than you'd think, probably in part to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise being infamous for its extremely divided fanbase; so when he first started stating his ludicrous views on "Hentai quills longer than a dick which you faggots like to shove up your asses all day" and the like, quite a few viewers thought he was being genuine. As he continued stating ridiculous nonsense over the years, those same people eventually caught on that he was trolling them and moved on.
• Verbal Tic: Good luck trying to count the times where he can get through a single sentence, let alone an entire video, without throwing at least one "fuck" in there.
• Vitriolic Best Buds: With TheBalishChannel. Both of them usually play games and take jabs at each other but are otherwise pretty close friends (if you can believe it).
