"Get a dictionary!"

Alonzo Lerone is an online YouTube comedian that specializes in reading people's messages on the internet that are full of typos, misused words, terrible grammar and text speak abuse.

Outside of this, he also films comedy sketches, music video reviews, challenges, and reading funny detention slips, test answers, and Twitter clapbacks/roasts (mostly from Wendy's and Gordon Ramsay).

You can find his channel here.

Tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch: Often happens with some of the messages — especially when someone publishes a message with no context. For example:
User: Wow! First period so intense!
    Comment: That's disgusting!!
User: What? ...I'm at a hockey game, you dumb shit!
  • Berserk Button:
    • Alonzo has a variety of these, such as:
      • Internet users making GoFundMe accounts for their own selfish needs, such as plastic surgery, buying a wedding ring, getting enough money to buy plane tickets to Las Vegas, or to get enough money to throw at strippers.
Alonzo: (after reading an account begging for donations to fund a user's birthday) ...You guys are some ungrateful mother...
      • Terrible misspelling.
      • Social media messages that confuse grammar and homophones.
      • He feels personally offended if the grammar/spelling offender has a variation of his name.
Alonzo: (under his breath) Why's your name got to be "Alonzo"/"Alonza"?
      • If his fans want to bring a tweet to his attention, it annoys him, especially if the user of the offending tweet believes that he is the person to solve their problem.
      • It's implied that he hates being called a Grammar Nazi. When a social media comment moans about people being touchy with bad spelling and grammar in tweets and Facebook messages, he reacts with mild discomfort.
    • Restaurant chain Wendy's, at people that claim they secretly use horse meat. It happens so often, Alonzo makes this disclaimer:
Alonzo: Next time, don't mention me in your tweets [to Wendy's] because Wendy's gonna kick both [of] our asses!
  • Big Brother Is Watching You: Alonzo reminds his audience that anyone's comments or social media messages can make a cameo on his Dumbest... series.
As many YouTube comments have said on his videos: "Is anyone watching their spelling very carefully so they don't appear in the next episode?"
  • Catchphrase:
    • "Get a dictionary!", or "Get a calculator!"
    • "Commas can save lives."
    • "[Social media] gave up on your ass." note
    • "How can you spell X, but you can't spell Y?" note
  • Deadpan Snarker:
    • Alonzo for definite.
    • Some of the fans of Alonzo, towards other users of social media with terrible grammar and spelling.
Facebook user: You are my row [sic] model.
Alonzo fan: She needs to ROW herself back to elementary school.
    • Social media users, outside of Alonzo's fans.
Facebook user: How many periods do you need to miss in order to find out you're pregnant?
      Facebook comment: Nine.
  • Epic Fail: Unsurprisingly, many times on social media.
    • This moment over a photograph someone put on the internet:
Comment: [Is] that your brother? He looks like you.
Owner of photograph: That's my girlfriend, dumbass!
    • A woman revealing to Facebook that she's pregnant by uploading a picture of a thermometer.
    • Annoyed American Twitter users snapping that they'll move to Canada, hours after the announcement of same-sex marriage being legal throughout every state in US in late 2015. Alfonzo lampshades that Canada had already legalised the same law years prior.
    • Users moaning about uneducated people, who write their annoyed messages with terrible grammar and spelling.
  • Grammar Correction Gag: Practically the entire point of the Dumbest Fails series, to the point of Alonzo overlooking the content in the messages to become annoyed over the spelling and grammar.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Many comments that are mentioned, often over misunderstandings.
  • Face Fault: One social media message had grammar and spelling so terrible, it made Alonzo fall off his chair.
  • I Take Offence to That Last One: The spelling is the only thing that Alonzo cares about, to the point of reading out comments that are sexist, racist and/or anti-LGBT in order to find the bad spelling.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Averted. Since Alonzo is only reading messages for their grammar and spelling, many of the conversations usually talk about Noodle Incidents.
  • Manipulative Editing: When it comes to photographs or texts with emoticons, Alonzo uses them to his advantage.
    • On a tweet with a few emoticon pictograms:
Alonzo: Ironically, when I was reading this, my face looked just like that [(-_-)] emoji. (imitates it)
    • On a Facebook message with a photo:
Alonzo: (zoom in on a clip of a sobbing Zendaya on a television in the photo's background) Zendaya in the background's just crying at your post.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Alonzo, himself. He even thanks Twitter users for naming him their Man-Crush.
  • Over Nine Thousand: Due to typos, Alonzo constantly catches Weather Reports that have towns that have temperatures in three figures.
  • Reaction Shot: Often, towards weird tweets and messages, usually with a well-known meme of a bit of footage from a movie or a TV show.
  • Recurring Character: The restaurant chain Wendy's, who's always ready to snap at social media messages that claim that the food they ate at their restaurant doesn't use beef in their recipes.
  • Reading the Stage Directions Out Loud: Alonzo insists on reading social media messages how they look as a part of Rule of Funny and Idiot Ball.
  • Running Gag:
    • A background Aside Comment calling out whenever a message doesn't have a comma in it.
      Voice: [Pronoun] forgot the comma!
    • "Disgusted", "barely", "garage", "wood", "hypocrite(s)" and "karma" being misspelled, to name a few.
    • Alonzo checking a photo to see whether there is a library in the background.
    • A social media user talking about education with spelling and grammar errors, making Alonzo say that said user should either go back to school or retake their exams.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Often, when Alonzo refuses to make sense of a social media message or read the rest of it.
  • Shout-Out:
    • To popular internet Vines, such as "Oh, hell no!" and "Bitch, where?"
    • The "Fuck This Shit, I'm Out" song made a brief cameo in mid-2016.
    • When someone writes "I'm a solider" [sic], Alonzo says to music "I need a solider."
    • The famous line "eat the booty like groceries" from Post to Be often cameos.
  • Squick: invoked Alonzo has a couple of these.
    • If a photograph looks disgusting, he'll often say that he can "smell" the picture.
    • If a grammar makes a social media message sound incestuous, Alonzo will gag.
    • Some comments on Twitter that are either very sexual or very disturbing.
Twitter comment: Sometimes I squeeze my girlfriend when she's on her period because she's my little ketchup packet.
      Alonzo: (shudders) EWWW!!!
    • invoked When someone uploaded a photograph of a douche saying that their youngest son thought it was a juice carton, Alonzo's response was:
      Alonzo: He TASTED THAT??!!
  • Suddenly Shouting: "If it's written in caps[lock], then I'm going to read [the message like it]."
  • Vocal Evolution: When the Dumbest... series began in 2011, Alonzo talked with more annoyance and disappointment in his tone. In 2015, he became more enthusiastic and theatrical.
