The Horrors of Hawin Lake is a fan-made Thomas & Friends 5-part horror series done by YouTube user The Blue Snowplow. It ran from October 2020 to February 2023.

The Horrors of Hawin Lake provides examples of:

  • Adaptation Origin Connection:
    • 1020 is an engine from Literature/The Railway Series that only appeared in Toby, Trucks and Trouble and was never on Sodor. But here, he's part of the Railway in the early days. He is also the same ghost engine Duncan sees on the bridge in "Duncan Gets Spooked", which was originally a separate character.
    • James’ crash way back in "Thomas and the Breakdown Train" was caused by 1020’s interference.
  • Adaptation Personality Change:
    • In The Railway Series, 1020 was described as an old, but kindhearted engine. Here, 1020, while old and hard working, is depicted as grumpy. In death, he becomes a complete sociopath who causes other engines to suffer just because he can.
    • Thumper, though he really didn’t have one to begin with. This interpretation of him has extreme feelings of inadequacy due to being a hodgepodge of machine parts.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Both 1020 and the blue tank engine never appeared together as the former was only in the Railway Series while the latter was only shown in a book based on the TV Series.
  • Connected All Along: Most of the Darker and Edgier episodes from Season 5 are connected with the tank engine from the book "The Monster Under the Shed".
    • Henry is heavily implied to have seen a real ghost in "Haunted Henry".
    • "Stepney Gets Lost" occurs when 1020 interferes with Stepney’s return home. He is stranded at the lake instead of the scrapyard, and 1020 torments him by posing as both an owl and some Troublesome Trucks.
    • The ghost engine that Duncan saw in "Duncan Gets Spooked" was 1020.
    • The events of "Rusty and the Boulder" happened because 1020 possessed Boulder.
    • "Put Upon Percy" happened because 1020 possessed S.C.Ruffey. Hawin and Old Bailey witness the Coal Mine collapse and Percy’s subsequent escape.
    • The events of "Toby and the Flood" have just happened courtesy of 1020 when Hawin arrives to confront him for the last time.
    • 1020 is indicated to have had some involvement in "Oliver’s Find".
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • In the early days, Hawin and 1020 swapped jobs for a day. While shunting, Hawin accidentally damaged a switch and neglected to tell anyone. When 1020 passed through with a train Hawin was meant to be pulling, he derailed on the switch, causing him to crash into the lake and drown.
    • Hawin falls off the waterfall to his death in order to placate 1020’s spirit.
    • S.C.Ruffey perishes in the Coal Mine when it collapses.
  • Demonic Possession: 1020 can possess others to cause chaos, such as Thumper.
  • Evil Is Petty: 1020 relentlessly torments Sir Topham Hatt’s engines despite them having no role in his death.
  • Faux Affably Evil: 1020 tries to appear sympathetic to Rusty, but quickly drops the act and doubles down on making the engines’ lives hell.
  • For the Evulz: While 1020 is mainly motivated by revenge against Hawin, most of his victims are those who have done nothing wrong.
  • Heroic B So D: Duncan is shaken to his core after seeing 1020’s ghost on the Old Iron Bridge, and is barely able to speak.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Hawin surrenders to 1020 and allows himself to die in order to end 1020’s torment of the other engines.
  • Madness Mantra: "Do a good job".
  • Mind Screw: 1020/Dane psychologically tortures Sodor's engines by using their fears and insecurities, such as when he makes James crash by exploiting his fear of being forgotten or using Thumper's fear of being a failure to dislodge Boulder. In some cases, like when he messed with Henry and Duncan, making his presence known is enough to freak them out.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After Boulder’s rampage, Sir Topham Hatt finally decides to shut down the construction project and apologizes to Old Bailey for doubting him.
  • Named by the Adaptation:
    • The tank engine from from "The Monster Under the Shed" is named Hawin, named after a lake on the Peel Godred Branch Line.
    • 1020 is nicknamed Dane (short for Killdane, a town on Sodor).
  • Nightmare Face: 1020's, during his angrier moments. Also, those he possesses, like Thumper, whose face appears to start melting in places as he goes out of control.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: Whatever 1020 did to S.C.Ruffey to make him crash in the mine and cause the cave-in. It's very likely that, with the rest of his victims, he also manipulated him with his deepest fears; some viewers think 1020 used S.C.Ruffey's memory of getting ripped apart by Oliver.
  • Ominous Owl: The hauntings are heralded by the hoot of an owl.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Averted with Sir Topham Hatt, who usually falls into this trope. He repeatedly refuses to stop construction near Hawin Lake despite several ghost sightings and Old Bailey’s warnings, dismissing the latter as a crazy old man.
  • Stealth Pun: a non-humorous example. “Dane” (1020’s actual name) is short for “Killdane”. And what did Hawin accidentally do? Kill Dane.
  • Suddenly Shouting: When he manifests, 1020 shifts between soft-spoken and bellowing fury on a dime.
  • Uncertain Doom: It's never stated what happened to Thumper after 1020 possessed him. One of the co-writers stated on Twitter that he was most likely sheeted up and abandoned, a mere husk of his former self.
