- Confirmed, actually. If you notice Planton's "Wall of Failures", you can find a photo of him scraped on SpongeBob's shoe from the very first movie; indicating Sponge on the Run takes place sometime after the 2004 movie.
- Well if this movie really does take place after the first one, it seems weird that Plankton would want to steal the formula again given that he already successfully obtained it in the first film, though there's always the chance he decided once wasn't enough.

According to Word of God, everything from Season 4 onwards, including the second movie, takes place before the first movie. That said, this film will be one of the last adventures that SpongeBob ends up going on before the events of the first movie take off. To help tie this movie into the first one, it will be shown that Krabs is considering expanding his business by showing a blueprint for the Krusty Krab 2 in his office.- In other words, it's gonna be a prequel.

The movie takes place in an Alternate Universe. Specifically, one where Spongebob went to (and met all his friends and future boss) at Camp Coral
In this alternate universe:- The events of the first movie still happened, only they failed because King Neptune realized Plankton's plan, or Squidward did not brag to Plankton that he was going to tell King Neptune about his plan.
- Certain Characters were not flanderized as they were in the normal universe. Mr. Krabs did not become the greedy, employee rights violator that he became in the show after the movie (he is shown giving out two-for-one coupons to the audience during his speech, instead of one-for-two coupons like he normally would).
- Many episodes where Squidward was the Butt-Monkey or was tortured(such as "Are You Happy Now?") never happened, and he is on better terms with Spongebob (even if he finds him very annoying).
- It was sort of confirmed in the spin-off series.
