Ploverleigh is the same town as Clatterford St Mary.
Both are rustic, eccentrically populated Devonshire parishes featured in English comedies, so, as the Law of Conservation of Detail demands, they are of course identical. Clatterford St Mary was the town's original name; it was changed to the more bucolic-sounding Ploverleigh in 1804, in an attempt to cash in on the Early Romantic craze for pastoralism. However, after the news of the love-potion scandal went public, the town changed its name back to Clatterford St Mary to protect the innocent. Caroline Martin's maiden name is Pointdextre, and the Vicar is a direct descendant of the Rev. Dr. Daly.
