Kwazii wears an eyepatch because he has Anisicoria

Kwazii occasionally takes off his eyepatch and can see through the covered eye. Anisicoria is a relatively common condition where one eye is bigger and more sighted than the other. Kwazii wears the eyepatch to train his weaker eye to see just as good as the bigger one. This is actually a kind of treatment some doctors use to treat it

Inkling is funding the Octonauts.

I mean, if you're a crew of intrepid explorers, you've got to get funding from somewhere! Since Inkling is the oldest Octonaut, the only aquatic animal in the crew (besides the amphibious Vegimals) and doesn't usually go on missions, it seems likely that the reason he is on board the Octopod is to supervise the mission he funded. As a marine animal, he's concerned by threats to ocean life and therefore set up the Octonauts to protect this delicate environment. If "The Octonauts and the Octopod Mystery" is anything to go on, it appears he's been doing this for quite a while - Tweak makes an explicit reference to there having been Octonauts before the current crew.

The Octonauts are experimental mixes between humans and their respective animals.

That would certainly explain the many oddities about them, including but not limited to...

• A polar bear and a sea otter being roughly the same size.
• An octopus breathing air.
• A sea otter being able to survive a platypus sting^note Platypus venom is fatal to animals up to the size of dogs.
• A polar bear, cat, penguin, sea otter, dog, and octopus surviving on a mostly-vegan diet.
• A sea otter being allergic to urchins.
• A rabbit being able to swim^note When rabbits' fur gets wet, they lose their ability to insulate heat, which often leads to them getting hypothermia.
• A polar bear, penguin, and sea otter requiring oxygen packs to breathe underwater.
  • That last one could be explained by the fact that none of those creatures can actually breathe underwater, they all hold their breath when submerged.

Will be another succesor crew in the future.

And the members will be Periwinkle, Pinto, Dashi's little sister, among others.

Peso have a Dark and Troubled Past.

We never see his father. Probably he died when he was a chick and Pinto a newborn, by a disease or mortally wounded by a predator as a shark or a leopard seal, and the medics cannot saved him. This is the reason why Peso is easily scared by unknown things and by predators, and why he choices to become a nurse, err... "medic".
