Amaltea can use magic
The reason why Amaltea has a bigger claim for Galatea's throne, despite being the younger sister, is because Ama has the potential to use magic but Dorotea is unable for some reason. Remember that women in this world were able to rise in power because most could use magic, and queens seem to globally be powerful sorceresses.

So despite Dorotea's talent in war strategies, tactics and superior strength and dutifulness, all comes to naught when she lacks the most important thing: magic. But if Amaltea is indeed a potential sorceress, that would explain why Galatea has belittled her all her life: Galatea always has preferred Dorotea and Amaltea lacked the proper levelheadness to rule, but tradition will compel Galatea to name Amaltea her next-in-line if the knowleadge of her being the magical sibling is revealed, so to avoid Ama's magic to manifest Galatea attacks her self-esteem.

  • To add up to the theory, it's revealed that Galatea plain up refused to train Amaltea alongside Dorotea. It implies that either she wanted to see if Dorotea could manifest magic after all without revealing Amaltea's potential, and when she couldn't, Galatea covered it up; or Dorotea has magic but very weak.

Ossian is the first male in history to be able to use magic.
Due to his gender, the magic tends to tie into females who he has a personal connection and manifests as more of a "Get me out of this!" outburst rather than the more flexible magic females can use but if this is true, this would make him even more valuable as a husband since he would probably be able to boost the magical strength of his wife.
  • And to add to the above, the potion his mother made him drink suppressed his powers but was overcome by a magic surge caused by the gang rape Ossian suffered. Then he subconsciously suppressed his magic, assuming based on what his mother had told him that the magic was some kind of geas she placed on him and that its failure meant it was now gone.
