The reason Nina broke up with Max between the first two games is because of his relationship with Sam.
It seems heavily implied as that's what they complain about during the epilogue of the second game and it's the one thing that makes sense for why Nina's so angry at Max and why he decided to stop seeing Sam. Actually surprised it wasn't confirmed.
