Rogue One homage

  • The Rogue Squadron games are part of the Star Wars Legends brand now, but the squadron canonically appears in The Empire Strikes Back (on Hoth). It is now very possible that the squadron was named in homage to the Rogue One commandos In-Universe, to remember their Heroic Sacrifice stealing the plans of the Death Star to the Empire. The daring mission they accomplished is very much in line with what the squadron does in the games - striking the Empire's crucial strategic places.
    • Not only that, but Rogue Squadron was founded by Luke and Wedge, veterans of the Battle of Yavin which wouldn't have been possible without Rogue One's sacrifice. They might have felt personally indebted to the original team because of that.
    • Confirmed by the Hope Dies arc of the canon Marvel Star Wars comics: during the Battle of Mako-Ta, Luke is asked to come up with a call sign for the improvized squadron he's leading. He deliberately chooses "Rogue" to honor Jyn Erso, since the current battle is also a suicidally small group of fighters trying to save the entire Rebel Alliance from the full might of an Imperial fleet.
