The Epilogue to the Story.
Several months later, the scene moves to a courtroom in Santa Rosita. The District Attorney (played by Don Rickles) is eager to prosecute the whole bunch of idiots, especially Culpepper, seeing it as a way to make a big name for himself. The barely-healed defendants, along with the wives and Mrs. Marcus, are brought in. The judge (played by either Orson Welles or Raymond Burr) enters. He says that this is the most convoluted, complicated, and utterly insane case he or anyone else has come across. He then says he can only think of one act more foolish than the ones already committed in this case: agreeing to judge the whole ridiculous matter. So, he decides to let the insurance companies argue over the financial damages, and drops the criminal charges provided every one of the group leave California forever. When the D.A. objects, the judge silences him with a Death Glare. Then, he looks at the defendants and says, "Get the hell out of here. Case dismissed."
  • If the judge is played by Burr, then the D.A. has got to be played by William Talman, AKA Hamilton Burger.
