Gabriel is trying to kill the MC
Within an hour of meeting him/her, Gabriel has asked them to jump down a cliff, build a visibly rickety bridge over a river, and ride a horse over that bridge. Bear in mind that the MC tells him they don't even know what galloping is, and that the horse Gabriel gives them to do all these acrobatics is overweight.
And then, knowing that Josephine's estate doesn't provide any shelter from the elements, he conveniently wanders off just before the MC realizes they need a place to stay for the night. Doesn't even loan them a blanket. Is he hoping exposure will do the job for him?
