Darvin is a natural-born telepath
- That's why he freaks out when he learns trenat gives telepathic abilities. He doesn't want this little fact about himself to be found, and/or he's scared of these on more general principles. This would also be immensely helpful in his work, which is one more reason to keep it secret (as an, arguably, unfair advantage that he can't help but have).
