Dan actually won
- The jig is up for Dobbs. Dan may secretly have been his puppet the whole time, but he played his role of Detective a little too well. Not only did he send pictures of George out of Potter's Bluff to have him identified, he also requested info be Telexed to him about Dobbs himself. Even if Dobbs starts the whole game over again and the authorities hear no more from Dan, there are now people who will investigate George's disappearance in Potter's Bluff, possibly along with the other strangers who have gone missing. Dobbs' little scheme only works because it's in such a small and isolated place. If outside authorities start taking a look at the place, and questing why they were asked about Dobbs before the local law enforcement went silent, he's in hot water. Bottom line: Dobbs wanted an antagonist to make his game more challenging and it's gone horribly right.
