On the Weir book:
Artemis is in the same universe as The Martian.
There's just no mention of Watney's Mars adventure. It happened before the events of Artemis but has nothing to do with the plot here - but it happened.
- This is functionally confirmed by the story "The Earthling" from "Some Selections from the Files of Mark Watney," included in some versions of The Martian. It mentions that an African-based corporate consortium has raised vast amounts of capital for space tourism. Sound familiar?
- Additionally, think to the caretaker of Aldrin Park. Older man, stubborn, cantankerous, loves making plants grow, has the skills and knowledge to grow grass on the Moon, and whose name is close to "Mike" but isn't. It's possible Mark Watney decided his ideal retirement job would be tending plants at Artemis.
