The Schmidt that possesses Shipley here and the Schmidt that appeared on Voromir in Infinity War are the same character ‘split’ into two.
From Schmidt’s description of what happened to him after he ‘activated’ the tesseract, his mind was essentially dispersed across Earth’s upper atmosphere until he managed to pull himself back together enough to transmit a signal and lure another humanoid body into space that he could possess. However, considering that Schmidt appeared as the unwilling guardian of the Soul Stone on Voromir in
Avengers: Infinity War, it could be that what appeared on Voromir was essentially an extension of the Soul Stone itself animating Schmidt’s body, accounting for his more subdued manner, while his mind remained around Earth to try and return in another host.
