You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

"And we can spend the rest of forever doing all sorts of fun things together..."
"And we never have to be lonely ever again..."
Sunny Day Jack

Something's Wrong with Sunny Day Jack is a NSFW horror Dating Sim Visual Novel previously made in Tyranobuilder and now moving to NaniNovel, in which the player character dates the titular Sunny Day Jack.

One day while out a thrift store, you stumble upon a tape which read "'84 - INCIDENT" and quickly bought it, you then decided to watch it at home but blacked out not remembering anything. But at least now you have a new roommate, although only you can see him. And he seems just a bit too interested in you...

So far only a demo has been released on itch.io and on Steam, having first came out on November 21st, 2021. The game also has a Twitter page and the studio behind it has a Patreon.

There was a Kickstarter for the full game that had already reached its initial goal within 7 hours.

This visual novel provides examples of:

  • The '80s: Sunny Day Jack was originally the host and the main character in a children's TV show from the 80's.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Sunny Day Jack is most likely to become one in the full game.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Sunny Day Jack has blue hair, a blue jacket, and is stated to be the main character/leader in his original TV Show. Of course, it turns out that he isn't actually that "heroic"...
  • Bowdlerise: A Softcore Mode is planned to be included in a later update, where the 18+ scenes are instead replaced with milder descriptions and alternate comfy scenarios. (The entire game overall is still for adults only, though.)
  • Boy Meets Ghoul: You, a living gender-neutral human, begins a relationship with what is implied to be the ghost of Sunny Day Jack.
  • Content Warnings: The following is written on one of the game's beginning screens:
    WARNING
The following game is an erotic horror dating sim meant to blend disturbing and frightening subject matter with arousal and romance. Subject matter can/may include murder, gore, violence, psychological horror, emotional manipulation/abuse, and other generally disturbing materials.
Players, please be advised of this and only play with full personal consent.
Reproducing any of the scenarios in this game may constitute illegal actions. Do not attempt to seek out relationships of this nature. Murder, emotional manipulation, and other such actions in real world scenarios is abuse.
Minors aged 18- are unwelcome to play this game. It is illegal for minors to partake in pornographic/adult sexual content. Ignoring this warning actively puts the game, its community, and its creator in legal/ethical jeopardy.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Shaun hates cucumbers.
  • Don't Try This at Home: One of the opening screens details this warning:
    Content Is Not Consent
    Intense content? Mature themes?
It's only fiction until it's not. And when it's not, you could face criminal charges.
  • Featureless Protagonist: The protagonist is truly meant to be the player and so is featureless.
  • Friendly Ghost: Sunny Day Jack is pretty nice for a spirit... but the friendliness part doesn't last too long...
  • Gentle Giant: The protagonist literally calls Sunny Day Jack one and he certainly lives up to the title... at first, anyway.
  • Haunted Technology: It's heavily implied that the VHS tape the protagonist plays at the beginning contained the spirit of Sunny Day Jack before he got set free.
  • Invisible to Normals: For some reason, the player is the only one able to physically see Sunny Day Jack.
  • Jump Scare: Defied; the creators have made it clear that there won't be any such startling sounds or imagery in the final game.
  • Mindlink Mates: It's not outright stated, but very heavily implied. Sunny Day Jack seems to be highly invested in the Protagonist's overall happiness partially because he feels joy through them, he becomes more agitated and aggressive when the Protagonist is feeling insecure or sad, is quick to read and reassure when the Protagonist is conflicted about something, and, most damningly, even reacts to the internal monologue the Protagonist says, implying that he can read their thoughts.
The Protagonist: (internally) What was really wrong about this again...?
  • Nice Character, Mean Actor: The preview images imply that while Sunny Day Jack is an upbeat, jolly fellow, the actor who had played him seemed to be quite troubled and often turned to substance abuse to cope with his issues.
  • Perky Goth: While Shaun dresses in a very horror fanboy gothic dress, he is seen to be friendly and relaxed in his demeanor.
  • Sympathetic Adulterer: Ian is confirmed by the developer to have cheated on Y/N. While part of the reason for Y/N's coldness towards him in the present day is implied to be partly due to this, and Y/N is portrayed as justified in not forgiving him easily, Ian is still given some sympathetic moments by taking full responsibility for his wrongdoing, an extra update shows that part of his insecurities are fed by his mom, and, at least so far, Ian has tried to make amends with Y/N.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: For the main characters:
    • Sunny Day Jack: Chocolate chip cookies.
    • Shaun: Peanut butter cups.
    • Ian: Cinnamon rolls.
    • Nick: Horchata boba.
    • Reece: Whole wheat bread.
  • Trauma Button: Serving Sunny Day Jack frozen yogurt with a cafe latte base and rum sauce will cause him to freeze up and apparently remember his troubled past life as the actor (first name unknown, last name Haberday) who played his character.
  • What Could Have Been: In-Universe, there apparently were plans to have a theme park opened.
  • Yandere: Sunny Day Jack is to become one in the full version of the game, although so far he has only shown possessiveness and no intent to murder just yet.
