Go To

Koiken Otome is an eroge released on 2012 by Eufonie, later unofficially translated in English on 2016.

In 992 AD, an alien race known as the Kotona invaded the Earth in search of human flesh. Humanity stood no chance against their invasion and they nearly went extinct as a result. In 1010 AD, their only ray of hope manifested from those who wielded the power of “Douryoku”, which is channeled into objects as vessels. The war against the Kotona continued until they were rumored to be all but wiped out in 1330 AD.

Many years passed once the Kotona were driven off the Earth, and peace set in once again. However, the alien threat was not entirely over and they established academies specialized in training Douryoku wielders to prepare for the next upcoming invasion.

Cue the arrival of Ooba Seiichi, who attends the elite Kashinomori Academy after the examinations gauged him to have incredible Douryoku power...except he is unable to manifest this power and considered useless as a result. Despite this disadvantage, he catches the eyes of several girls who attend the school, each with varying abilities: Akane Yasukuni, who comes from a renowned family with fire abilities but is average in terms of ability; Yuzu Someya, Seichi’s clumsy childhood friend who has a similar predicament as him; Tokou Kamishiro, An Ice Person who is the strongest in his class; and Yves Elaine Austin, a haughty girl hailing from the rivaling Saint David’s Academy.

As Seichi struggles to get by in the Academy, he pursues one of the four main heroines, each having a certain part of the story.

  • Alien Invasion: Humanity was attacked by one in the backstory. It was a miracle that they survived due to those possessing Doukryoku. Another is expected to come at any time.
  • Benevolent Conspiracy: Downplayed. The Japanese Government does not really make this official over the true origin of Douryoku users, but Kashinomori Academy still shares the possible theory, and they do not seem interested in trying to hunt down those who do know.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Kaoru gets easily mistake for a girl with short hair, though he proves to be a boy.

  • Green Thumb: Yves’ plant abilities, which she uses for offensive and defensive purposes.

  • Jerkass Has a Point: When Yves defeats Seiichi, Akane, and Touko in a three-on-one fight, she calls them out on their weaknesses one why they are not stronger. Case in point is calling out Akane for relying on Seiichi for her douroyku power and Touko being stuck in her I Just Want to Be Normal mindset to point she is stagnating her potential to achieve more. Even their teacher Fujishima wholeheartedly agrees with her.

  • Muggles Do It Better: Discussed when they bring up the possibly of another Kotona invasion, as technology has advanced to the point they could possibly repel it without the need for Douryoku users. However, since that has never been tested before, and Douryoku users were proven to be effective weapons against the Kotona, the Academies are still considered important as of today.
  • Only the Chosen May Wield: Akane and her family are the only ones who can wield Homura Kotona Osame, their legendary Douryoku vessel, due to their bloodline. Even then, only one among her family can use it at a time, until current chosen wielder dies.

  • Readings Are Off the Scale: Seiichi’s power hit 9 on all digits during his measurement test, placing him in Phase SSS. How he is able to possess this power yet not manifest douryoku himself is part of his adventure at the academy.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: The Austin family is so powerful financially that Yves can make a massive propaganda broadcast of the Saint David’s Academy and easily walk into their rival school’s secret training grounds with approval of the Headmaster.
  • Stock Light-Novel Calamity Princess: Akane is a visual novel example of the trope with her fire abilities, hotheaded stubbornness, and hailing from a distinguished family.
  • Training from Hell: S classes are said to go through this compared to the C class.
    • Seiichi undergoes one from Fujishima. First as a theoretical means of him activating his Phase SSS power, then so he could survive out in the field when he has no teammates to rely on for his amplification power.
  • Weak, but Skilled: An unusual that with Yuzu, who is the only C class among the main girls. She is no means a professional, but C class is dedicated to research, allowing her to learn so much about other people’s Douryoku powers.
