Fairly Dangerous is a free visual novel developed by kaleidofish. It follows the adventure of five fairies who are curious about the world outside of the Enchanted Forest and decide to hitchhike in a human's backpack and see what they can find. They end up in a strange apartment, too far from their home to use magic, and faced with all sorts of dangers.

Tropes:

  • Anyone Can Die: You can lose any of the main characters unexpectedly, and in fact Berry's death is unavoidable.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The best possible ending you can get is four of you making it back to the Enchanted Forest, but Berry is still dead.
  • Black Comedy
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Even among the fairies, Lavender is clearly considered odd; she tends to ramble about random subjects and has a habit of wandering off by herself. However, the party's survival rests in her hands. She is the key to the fairies getting back home, and if she dies, then the rest of the fairies will probably end up following her in short order.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: All of them, pretty much. The one you're guaranteed to see every time is Berry getting microwaved, but you can also see Lavender getting electrocuted, Saffron getting impaled, Pistachia ingesting rat poison...
  • Emotionless Girl: Mentha comes off as incredibly detached from her friends' deaths, but a later conversation with Lavender implies that this is a trait of all fairies and that Pistachia and Saffron are only acting like what they think grieving should be.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: You don't see most of the deaths, thankfully; reading the descriptions is bad enough.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: It's impossible to save Berry from the microwave; if you opt not to mess with the buttons, Pistachia will just do it anyway.
    • If you make it to the window, your only options are death. You can either give in to your hallucinations and get electrocuted by an insect light, or shake them off and end up crushed by a shutting window.
  • Fluffy Tamer: Lavender can be this if you make your choices correctly. She asks you a bunch of questions about the rat, and if you give her the right information, she tames the rat that threatens the party, and Mentha and whoever else survives can get back to the Enchanted Forest safely. If you refuse to answer her questions or give her the wrong information, though, she ends up getting devoured for her efforts.
  • Foreshadowing: Mentha notes that fairies have been mistaken for bugs by humans in the past. It's possible to die via electric flyswatter, or by jumping into an insect light.
  • Homoerotic Subtext: It's implied that Pistachia has romantic feelings for Berry. Probably why Pistachia is the one to show by far the most grief at Berry's death.
  • Insufferable Genius: Mentha.
  • Multiple Endings: The endings can be sorted into three groups: the ones where everyone dies, the ones where some of the fairies decide to make the most of their new life in the strange apartment, and the ones where the surviving fairies make it back home.
  • Never My Fault: Mentha refuses to take any responsibility for Saffron's death if she pushes her into the bottle, instead saying that Saffron shouldn't have fallen over so hard.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: How most of the deaths happen. Berry dies in every route after being trapped in a microwave when either Mentha or Pistachia starts messing with the buttons despite not knowing what they say. Lavender can die from being electrocuted due to messing around with a metal pin at your encouragement or from being eaten by a rat she was attempting to tame despite not really knowing how to do so. Saffron can die if you get angry enough to push her into a glass bottle. And the list goes on...
