"They taste like candied mangoes."

Writhe is a game about shooting gigantic South-East Asian worms.

Wait, let us start over.

Writhe is an indie First-Person Shooter / survival game hybrid created by the indie game company, CTRL Studios.

Set in an alternate version of Thailand, a mutation strain in the native Sago worm population have resulted in the worms growing to giant-size, and infesting parts of the country including Chatuchak, Muang Borang, Bangkok and other major provinces. Elite mercenaries called "exterminators", armed to the teeth with worm-destroying weapons, are hired to take care of the Sago worm threat in a series of grub-infested arenas.

Grab your guns and paint the floor with GRUBJUICE!

  • Ascended to Carnivorism: One reason why sago worms are named such is because they're herbivores who feeds on parts of the sago palm trees, which South East Asia has an abundance of. But after the mutation that turns them giant-sized, the worms now feasts on flesh.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: Featuring a species somewhat lesser-known to the West, anyways, the South East-Asian sago worm, most of them larger than humans due to a science experiment Gone Horribly Wrong.
  • Bug War: Albeit one where the human side are paid mercenaries killing for sport, and usually operates alone.
  • The City Narrows: There's a level set in the slums of downtown Bangkok, but now it's devoid of life and infested with oversized worms.
  • Devoured by the Horde: Lose all your health against the worms or get yourself hopelessly outnumbered and outflanked, and you'll be treated to a cutscene of miltiple worms ripping you apart.
  • The Dog Bites Back: In a way - sago worms are a rich source of food in most of South East Asia, including East Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand (where the game is set) and other parts; now that the worms are giant-sized, humans are on the menu.
  • Down Inthe Dumps: One of the many arenas is a massive landfill, containing wrecked vehicles and car crushers.
  • Endless Game: You just keep killing worms - increasing in size and numbers as the game goes on - until you're overwhelmed.
  • Excuse Plot: There are giant worms infesting a deserted city, and you're tasked with eliminating all of them. No further questions asked.
  • Featureless Protagonist: All the exterminators, who spends the game in full-body armor, face-concealing helmets, and doesn;t reveal his or her face at any point.
  • Guns Akimbo: The default equipment for all exterminators, a machine-gun and Plasma Cannon combo. Which could be upgraded by killing more worms.
  • Mook Maker: Sago worm pods, flower-like protrusions usually found on walls or the ground, which will spawn extra worms regularly.
  • Sand Worm: The largest, Giant Mook-variety of sago worm monsters definitely counts under these, with many of them tunneling out of the ground to chomp you up.
