Venturous: In the Footsteps of the Fallen is a partial-conversion Game Mod for Doom II that was created by PixelFox. It takes heavy inspiration from Indiana Jones and other similar works, and was originally released on September 2023 on the ZDoom forum.

The plot of the mod involves an Adventurer Archaeologist who tries to stop Those Wacky Nazis from opening a gate to the lost city of Atlantis.

It can be downloaded here.

This game mod provides examples of:

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: When the player picks up weapons, the pickup message will use alliterative phrasing such as "Looted a Levergun," or "Scavenged an SMG."
  • Adventurer Archaeologist: The player character of the mod is based on this trope, particularly on one of the most famous examples.
  • Adventurer Outfit: The protagonist wears one consisting of a fedora and leather jacket. Fedoras and Jackets can also be found as armor pickups throughout the mod.
  • Bag of Spilling: The protagonist loses his weapons in some levels, particularly at the beginning of each episode. He usually at least keeps his revolver and machete.
  • Boom, Headshot!: You can land headshots on several of the enemies. They will usually drop small health kits as a result.
  • Exploding Barrels: Lanterns that can be seen in some areas will explode if you shoot them.
  • Expy: The protagonist is one of Indiana Jones, down to having a similar outfit.
  • Hollywood Torches: You can pick up torches which will never run out to light dark areas, and throw them as weapons if you pick up more than one.
  • Machete Mayhem: The main character uses a machete as a default melee weapon, which is always wielded alongside the revolver.
  • No Name Given: The protagonist in the mod is never referred to by a name.
  • Tap on the Head: At the end of "The Dig," the protagonist is knocked out with the butt of a rifle and captured by the Medjay troops.
  • Those Wacky Nazis: These are the main antagonists of the mod, though they are never explicitly referred to as "Nazis."
