Go To

Super Mario and the Sacred Bells is a Super Mario Bros. fangame. Taking place after Super Paper Mario, it follows Mario, Luigi, and Peach.

One day, Bowser returns and attacks the castle — and this time, he has empowered himself with strange dark magic. Toadsworth then appears and informs Mario of seven sacred bells hidden around the world that, if rung, can dispel Bowser's magic. And so, Mario sets out to find the bells, fighting the Koopalings along the way.

Examples:

  • Astral Finale: After ringing the seven bells, the final world is the Crystal Palace, which is in space.
  • Big Bad: Bowser, as usual, is the antagonist who is using dark magic to invade the Mushroom Kingdom and wants the legendary gem — until it turns out that Dimentio was manipulating him all along so he could acquire a powerful gem and destroy the Mushroom Kingdom for revenge on Mario.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Bowser seems to be the villain for most of the game, but after the boss battle against him, it is revealed that Dimentio was manipulating him.
  • Excuse Plot: Bowser is invading the Mushrooms Kingdom with dark magic, so Mario has to ring the titular seven sacred bells and dispel his magic. Not much more to it; even The Reveal that Dimentio was behind it all barely adds anything, as it amounts to briefly featuring a fan-favorite villain.
  • Hijacked by Ganon: In an odd variation, it is series antagonist Bowser who gets hijacked by a newer Big Bad, Dimentio, who gave Bowser his dark magic.
  • I Lied: Morton says that he will fight the heroes with 'no tricks or anything'. He then goes back on it and summons a giant bone fish resembling Kingfin to help him.
  • Interface Spoiler: The final world, the Crystal Palace, has three levels shown on the map, but Bowser is fought in the second one, spoiling that this is not the last battle. Afterwards, Dimentio reveals himself and becomes the final boss.
  • MacGuffin Delivery Service: Dimentio, disguised as Toadsworth, manipulates Mario into ringing the seven bells, which he himself cannot ring as he is made of dark magic, to awaken the Crystal Palace and get the powerful gem inside.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: By ringing the seven bells, Mario winds up awakening the crystal palace and gives Dimentio the chance to snatch the gem of power there, exactly as Dimentio planned.
  • Never Say "Die": Continuing from Super Paper Mario, Iggy says that he will 'end your game'.
  • One-Winged Angel: When Dimentio's first phase is beaten, he turns into a giant face with Giant Hands of Doom.
  • Playing Both Sides: Dimentio disguised himself as Toadsworth and told the heroes to ring the sacred bells, and it is implied that he gave Bowser his dark magic to use, allowing him to lie about the bells having the power to dispel the magic. In doing this, he was able to access the Crystal Palace and the powerful gem inside.
  • The Very Definitely Final Dungeon: The Crystal Palace, a giant palace in space awakened after the seven bells are rung.
  • Warmup Boss: Larry Koopa, piloting Bowser's clown car, is the boss of the first world.
