Novel AI is an AI-powered Interactive Fiction game where, much like AI Dungeon 2, allows users to input their own responses to prompt an advanced Artificial Intelligence to continue to the story. Unlike AI Dungeon, however, it's less of a role-playing game and more of a story creator, though a mode for text adventures is available.

Novel AI contains examples of:

  • Artificial Brilliance: Much like AI Dungeon 2, the AI is capable of creating scenarios that can even puzzles the smartest of Game Masters, though with the additional 1024 tokens (2048 with additional subscription tiers), it's capable of remembering scenarios it took much better compared to them.
    • Newer models starting from Clio onward take this up to eleven. Despite its far smaller parameters, it was finetuned well enough to output more coherent and creative generations, also helped by the increased context token count up to 8,192 for the highest subscription tier (Opus) — the lowest tier also exceeded the previous highest 2,048 with 3,072. The next one, Kayra, is even more so, with some users putting it on par with summer 2020 Dragon model from AI Dungeon 2, which considering its Artificial Brilliance entry, is saying something.
  • Artificial Stupidity:
    • When creating art, the AI may sometimes mess up on some details, resulting in certain areas clashing around the art or extra body parts of an organism.
    • The text generator is prone to repeating text patterns. The newer models are still just as prone, but this is disguised in the form of rewording or use of synonyms. The Clio model got this bad during its early days until a later update fixed the bug causing this.
  • Game Mod: Introduced on July 29, 2021, Custom Modules, where users can compile their own training data for the text generator, can be created and shared with others. Want to style stories based on a specific genre or author? Go ahead. Want to use AI Dungeon's training data for a do-it-yourself Embedded Precursor? Knock yourself out.
  • Game Plays Itself: It's possible to let the AI generate the story without the commands, resulting in scenarios that can potentially go Off the Rails without the right options.
  • Greek Chorus: Hypebot, a feature where the AI will give some brief commentary in a speech balloon below the story window every so often (1 in 20 generations being the default setting).
  • Mascot: Their mascot is a mischievous goose with the pen nib motif for its beak.
  • Take That!: At the time of the site's launch, its most advanced writing model was Sigurd, named after a Germanic folk hero whose greatest feat was slaying a dragon. This was a jab at AI Dungeon 2's Dragon model.
