Kid Klown in Night Mayor World is a 2D Platform Game released by Kemco in 1993.
Our titular protagonist is Kid Klown, who is part of a travelling clown family who is on their way to their next performance. However, the Evil Night Mayor confronts the group and asks Kid Klown to help him seek treasure. Kid Klown, aware of the evil Night Mayor's ways from his parents, naturally refuses. The Night Mayor kidnaps Kid's family and takes them to his world, and challenges the young clown to rescue them. So there you have it. Kid Klown has to travel through the Night Mayor's twisted world to rescue his family and take down the Night Mayor.
Kid Klown in Night Mayor World is a standard platformer with a slight twist. Kid Klown battles enemies with the use of his balloons. They are useful as throwable projectiles or just letting him hover over distances. There are total of seven stages in the game, but the first five can be selected in any order.
The game was originally a Mickey Mouse game in Japan, going by the name of Mickey Mouse 3: Dream Balloon, but since Capcom owned the exclusive publishing rights to Disney-brand games in the U.S at the time, Kemco was forced to give the game a re-touch, removing any references to Mickey Mouse and replacing it with a whole new character. The original plot revolves around Mickey working part-time as a balloon vendor in order to buy a birthday present for Minnie Mouse. Upon hearing from Pluto that Minnie cannot wake up, he goes to investigate and enter Minnie's house to find that she has been trapped in a series of nightmares. In order for her to awaken from her scary dreams, Mickey magically enters Minnie's mind to save her.
As far as Kid Klown himself goes, this wouldn't be the last we hear from him. Kid Klown would reappear in a pseudo-sequel, Kid Klown In Crazy Chase for the Super Nintendo, with a new re-vamped design and introducing a whole new universe of characters.
This game contains examples of:
- Balloonacy: Kid Klown's arsenal is balloons. Aside from attacking, they also slow his descent after jumping, allowing him to cover greater distance.
- Beanstalk Parody: Level 3 takes place in this. In the original Mickey Mouse game, it takes place on Willie the Giant's beanstalk. Mickey must climb to the top of the beanstalk while dodging giant insects, flying eggs, rain clouds, and Lucifer the Cat. The boss of the stage is Willie the Giant himself. Kid Klown fights a veiled modded version of him.
- Big Bad: The Night Mayor. In the original Mickey Mouse version, it was the Horned King. The former is the one who kidnapped Kid Klown's family, and the latter is the one who trapped Minnie in a series of nightmares to begin with.
- Classic Cheat Code: It even has the same button prompts as the Konami Code. Enter them on the title screen to access the Hard Mode.
- Green Hill Zone: The tutorial level and the first level, as to be expected.
- Konami Code: After you finish the game in Normal Mode, you get a message saying that you should input the Konami Code, as doing so will allow you to enter Hard Mode.
- Level Ate: Stage 5 takes place in a world filled with birthday cakes.
- Level in the Clouds: The third level takes place in a cloudy sky world with beanstalks.
- Obviously Evil: The Night Mayor is not exactly subtle. Appearing in a stove-pipe top hat, a cloak, and with a thin butt-chin and handlebar mustache. Come on, his name is even a pun on Nightmare, for pete's sake.
- Ominous Owl: A giant owl serves as the boss of the second level. It attacks Kid Klown by swooping down at him and tossing feathers. In the original Mickey Mouse version of the game, the boss was Ziggy the Vulture.
- Slippy-Slidey Ice World: Stage 4 is set within an arctic wasteland.
- Toy Time: Stage 2 takes place in a jovial toy land.
- Xtreme Kool Letterz: It's always spelled Kid Klown, just to make it seem cooler that way.
- Your Princess Is in Another Castle!: After completing the first five levels, Kid Klown finds his captive family, but the Night Mayor whisks them away to his castle, kicking off the true final stages. In the original, Minnie finally wakes up from her nightmares, but the Horned King challenges Mickey to come to his castle, kicking off the final level.
