Hunter x Hunter: Altar of Dragon Vein is a 2001 action-adventure RPG video game based on the 1999 Hunter × Hunter anime series

The story starts in the country of Midonite with Gon and Killua saving Ponzu and Romaria from mysterious attackers. When the Hunter Association comes to investigate, they soon learn that the men work for a group of Nen users whose leader is a former Hunter named Zegin, who is after the Dragon Vein.

As the plot thickens, Sabaki (who is one of Zegin's minions and a young man with a hatred for the Hunter Association) has his own agenda.


Tropes

  • Ascended Extra: The Hunter Exam applicant Ponzu makes another appearance and has a larger role after Gon and Killua save her and Romaria.
  • Big Bad: Zegin Highline serves as this for the game. He is a former Hunter who was responsible for murdering an entire group of applicants during a previous Hunter Exam and seeks to acuire a powerful aura known as the Dragon Vein.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Being a manipulator Amane can do this to anyone by ringing his bell, he briefly did to Kurapika.
  • Call-Back: Gon remembers Ponzu when he reunites with her during the fourth phase of the Hunter Exam and how he helped Leorio get her badge.
  • Final Boss: Sabaki serves as the last obstacle Gon and the Hunter Association faces after Zegin
  • Freudian Excuse: Sabaki's mother was sick and his father went to take the Hunter Exam in order to get enough money to save her, but she was already dying and begged for him to stay. His mother died never getting the chance to see him again and learned that his father was killed by that years examiner Zegin. Now he despises all Hunters for indirectly ruining his life and seeks to hunt them all down.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Sabaki acknowledges that he became just as bad as Zegin in his quest for vengeance.
  • Parental Abandonment: Sabaki's father left to take the Hunter Exam to save his dying mother only for her to die long before the exam was over. Turns out he would be one of the many applicants killed by Zegin that year.
  • The Sociopath: Zegin shows no remorse for his actions, doesn't bat an eye when one of his followers his killed, and seeks to be free of all responsibility for all the crimes he committed.
  • You Killed My Father: Turns out that Sabaki's father was one of the forty applicants Zegin murdered during that years exam.
