Hap Hazard is a Platform Game made by Raptisoft, and is a Spiritual Successor to the classic Jumpman.

The evil Dr. Otto Oblivion has set bombs all over Space Station Icarus, and the titular Hap has been sent to stop him. Hap has to clear 39 screens of bombs as quickly as possible, then capture Otto on the 40th and final screen before he can get away. You start with a 20-minute countdown clock to cover the entire game, which can be extended by performing certain actions on different levels. If the clock hits zero before you reach level 40, it's game over.

As with Jumpman, the point of the game is that every level (save the first) has its own gimmick, ranging from moving platforms to weird enemies, and from a rotating laser to darkness.

The game was also released for iOS devices, but that version has since been delisted.

The game's official website can be found here.

Tropes:

  • Anti-Frustration Features:
    • In the confrontation against Otto Oblivion on level 40, the timer is automatically stopped, most likely to prevent an Unintentionally Unwinnable situation if you got to level 40 with not enough time to beat it.
    • You have infinite time in Survival mode, most likely to make up for the fact that you have limited lives in this mode.
    • Because of the increased difficulty of this game compared to the original Jumpman (and that game wasn't exactly easy to begin with), you're given forty lives in the Survival mode compared to Jumpman's seven.
  • Critical Annoyance: A loud siren will play if the timer is down to one minute left. And no, it does not stop once you get to level 40.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: Unlike Jumpman, you can't climb on to ledges while jumping.
  • Damsel in Distress: Princess Ganymede in level 30. It should be noted that whether you manage to successfully rescue her or not does not impact the ending of the game, though you are robbed of a score bonus if you fail to save her.
  • Excuse Plot: There's little else to the game than clearing bombs.
  • Game-Breaking Bug: Due to that level's gimmick, if you fail while on level 25, the resulting explosions will crash the game.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: The plot has Hap Hazard trying to stop Otto Oblivion from blowing up Space Station Icarus before it's too late. To reflect this, the entire game is a Timed Mission.
  • Guide Dang It!: You're more than likely to end up killing Princess Ganymede the first time you reach level 30, as there's no indication of which bombs open the door to get to her and which bombs bring the crusher down.
  • Green Hill Zone: As with Jumpman, in the first level nothing much happens.
  • It's a Wonderful Failure: Run out of time (or lose all your lives in Survival mode), and you'll be treated to the sight of the entire space station blowing up, with the following message afterwards:
You failed to stop Otto Oblivion in time.
Space Station Icarus has been bombed to smithereens.
  • Moon Logic Puzzle: The game is utterly impossible until you figure out that dying right as you complete the level adds two minutes to your clock.
  • Power-Up Letdown: In the levels where you can shoot a gun (or a mega laser), you can't jump.
  • Take Your Time: Survival mode gives you infinite time, but there's a catch: you have a limited amount of lives.
  • Timed Mission: You get infinite lives, but finite time. Averted in Survival mode, where you can Take Your Time.
  • A Winner Is You: The ending just states that you have successfully captured Otto and saved the station.
