Hangaroo is a flash-based game that was first released in 2001 by NC Entertainment for Windows XP. It's basically a classic hangman game... if you replace the "man" with a mouthy kangaroo, reduce the number of allowed wrong guesses per round to just 4, and require you to complete 10 rounds to win the game.

A sequel, Hangaroo 2 was released in 2007. It has the exact same gameplay as the previous one, just with a different background and additional sets of words/phrases.

The first game can be played online here.

The game contains examples of:

  • Deadpan Snarker: The kangaroo never fails to make snide comments if you pick a wrong letter (e.g. "Thanks a lot there, Einstein", or "Why do I always get stuck with the idiots?" and many more). If you beat the game, he'll commend you by saying "Well, maybe you're not as dumb as you look."
  • Death as Comedy: If you fail the round, the kangaroo is hanged. Not long afterwards, his ghost emerges (complete with wings and a halo), and he ascends to the top of the screen while glowering at you. He gets killed anyway even if you do manage to save him from the hanging, and while no ghosts appear in this instance, the cause of death is so absurdnote  that one can't help but laugh.
  • Dynamic Difficulty: The words/phrases you have to guess each round are randomly generated with no regard to difficulty. You might get a proverbnote  right after having to name a very obscure animal/plant/disease that contains uncommon letters (e.g. "mononucleosis").
  • Four Is Death: Pick four incorrect letters in a round, and the kangaroo gets hanged.
  • No Animals Were Harmed: A statement that "No kangaroos were harmed during the making of this game" appears on the screen before the credit and title screen.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: If you manage to somehow clear the game, the kangaroo will put off his noose and dash off the hanging platform. As he's hopping to the distance, he gets either run over by a truck, struck by lightning, or crushed by a falling meteor that comes out of nowhere, killing him anyway.
  • Shout-Out: Hangaroo 2 uses a wrong letter counter with Family Feud-style Strikes.
  • Winged Soul Flies Off at Death: If you don't immediately restart or quit the game after failing a round, you'll see the blue ghost of the kangaroo fly off the platform while scowling at you for letting him die.
