Ben 10: Protector of Earth is the first Ben 10 video game, developed by High Voltage Software for the Playstation 2, Playstation Portable, and Nintendo Wii. It's a Beat 'em Up featuring Ben in a fight across the United States to thwart the plans of Vilgax and other series villains. As Vilgax has stolen half of Ben's ten alien transformations, he can only access five: Fourarms, Heatblast, XLR8, Cannonbolt, and Wildvine.

A DS version was also developed by 1st Playable Productions, featuring slightly different sidescrolling gameplay and a cheat that lets the player access Upchuck.

The video game contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Adaptational Badass: The Omnitrix gets a huge power upgrade compared to its show counterpart, despite losing access to a quarter of its aliens. Ben can freely transform between forms, and the down time is significantly shorter.
  • Bears Are Bad News: Crystal Claws which are bears spliced with Diamondhead's DNA are enemies.
  • Damsel in Distress: Gwen gets captured by Dr. Animo leading Ben and Max to track them.
  • Disc-One Nuke: Fourarms Boulder Bash is an incredibly damaging move that one-shots most enemies (and two shots the rest), making even boss fights a breeze. It gets hampered late game by the sheer number of rushing enemies, but it's incredibly solid for the first 2/3 of the game.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Unlike most of his appearances, Four Arms regularly throws boulders and can summon "tombstones" to throw enemies into.
  • Cel Shading: The game uses this to keep the aesthetics of the cartoon.
  • Cliffhanger: The last Side Mission ends on this with the Tennysons wondering how they'll get out of the Null Void.
  • Combos: Clicking the Light Attack, Heavy Attack and Special Attack buttons in specific orders leads to brand new attacks as you unlock them.
  • Crazy Enough to Work: With the government too busy dealing with a possible alien invasion to help the Tennysons, Ben suggests stealing rockets at Cape Canaveral. Gwen scoffs at such an idea but Max accelerates the Rust Bucket to the facility.
  • Evil Laugh: Most of the villains engage in this, especially Vilgax which is surprising since he never does this in the classic series.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation:
    • The pictures you unlock after each level show situations that can't have happened in the levels. For instance, one picture shows Four Arms riding a subway but the level with the picture had a Traintop Battle.
    • You reach a point when the Omnitrix and all its aliens
  • Hero Insurance: Lampshaded Trope. Ben thinks that since he's a hero, he'd be exempted from cleaning up the mess he makes from his fights. Grandpa Max and Gwen says otherwise.
Four Arms: You never see this in any of the comic books.
  • Hybrid Monster:
    • Animo unleashes chimeric beasts that are crossed between Earth animals and Ben's alien forms.
    • The planet monster boss is the result of it being supercharged by Wildvine's DNA.
    • A lesser example and Played for Laughs. Back in Max's Plumber days, the Plumbers created a cross between a slug and brussel sprouts as a bio-weapon but it didn't work so Max gives it to his grandchildren as food.
  • Mini-Boss: Several such as Sixsix and Clancy. The final level in the Null Void's combat arena pits you against the mini bosses one at a time.
  • Mission Control: Grandpa Max provides the objectives to Ben via a communicator.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The last time Kevin was seen was back at the Null Void, and he was released by Vilgax.
    • Vilgax uses his future design from Ben 10,000 rather than his normal cyborg appearance.
    • Dr Animo's appearance bear similarities to his Ben 10,000 counterpart. Although his head is still attached to his body and is just using a headless gorilla as a suit.
  • Red Herring: Ben and co initially suspect the Forever Knights are responsible for the game's events until they find out they are just trying to protect the Earth from the true Big Bad.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Vilgax hates Ben so much that he offers his minions Omnitrix energy crystals to kill Ben and is willing to offer Ghostfreak the Omnitrix as a reward if the Ectonurite villain gets rid of Ben.
  • Shout-Out: The Yenaldooshis are called Fangfaces.
  • Sudden Name Change: The Yenaldooshis are renamed Fangfaces here.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: After his defeat, Kevin is dragged back into the Null Void, begging Ben to save him. Ben begrudgingly admits that Kevin didn't deserve the fate he met.
  • The Stinger: Shows a very injured Vilgax getting healed by his drones. He warns Ben that he will return.
  • Villain Team-Up: Ghostfreak and Vilgax team up to get rid of Ben.
  • We Will Meet Again: Vilgax says this at the very end.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Grandpa Max's response if Ben attacks the RV at the start of the levels.
