Away: Journey to the Unexpected is a Roguelike Action RPG by Aurelien Regard and Jim Gennisson.

You play as a boy you can name whatever you want who's staying with his grandparents while his own are away on an assignment so secret, even he doesn't know. One day, an explosion occurs one morning, and you discover a huge hole in the basement that leads to a cave that takes you to the outside world.

Apparently, some organization called Labiworks has been digging in the area, and their actions have released some mysterious red liquid that's turning everyone into monsters. So, armed with a stick you got from your dog, you set out on a journey to find out what's happening and put an end to it with the help of an eclectic cast of characters your can meet on your adventure.

The game was released on February 5th, 2019.

Away: Journey to the Unexpected contains examples of:

  • Body Horror: The Labiworks Manager. He apparently landed in some of the liquid, and as a result, his skin is red, one of his arms has mutated into a vestigal nub, and there's growths covering the right side of his body.
  • Dem Bones: One of the enemies you face in the game are living skeletons dressed as Labiworks workers.
  • Hearts Are Health: Your Life Meter is a line of hearts.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: You get to choose the boy's name.
  • Inexplicable Treasure Chests: There are treasure chests in the game from which you can get money, fireworks, or health.
  • Life Meter: Yours is located in the top left corner of the screen.
    • Each enemy has one located above them.
  • P.O.V. Cam: You view the game through the kid's eyes.
  • Rule of Three: You have to pull three levers in at least the first two areas to gain access to the Labiworks facility there.
    • Your Life Meter is composed of three hearts at the start of the game.
  • Weird Currency: The money in the game is made of yellow triangles.
