Video Game / Advance Wars 2: Andy's Adventure

Go To

Advance Wars 2: Andy's Adventure is a comedic ROM hack of the Gameboy Advance Game "Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising". The game has a couple of changes to all of the characters, and the campaign stars Andy ... as he causes trouble for all of the nations with the help of Black Hole, through a lot of idiocy and randomness.

Andy's Adventure contains examples of:

  • Artificial Stupidity: A lot of units prioritize destroying pipe seams before anything else, even if said pipe seams would benefit them.
  • Beyond the Impossible: In-Universe, Flak is stated to have the power to defy the laws of physics. This manifests in how campaign maps are set up (one level has him somehow set up a wall of pipes around Kanbei's bases and the battleship in the lake) and his day-to-day bonuses (Indirect Bombers).
  • Big Bad: Nell seems to want to destroy Andy and get the other nations to take him out too. It turns out Hachi is the true villain, as he wanted conflict just so he could get paid for it.
  • Big Damn Heroes: After fighting against Hachi alone with Andy, Lash, or Hawke, you prepare to fight Hachi again - when Flak and Adder appear to help you out on the side, with Flak even bringing his gimmick units with him. Hawke seems impressed with it.
  • Confusion Fu: Indirect Bombers? Somewhat powerful Anti-Airs? You're looking at Flak here.
  • The Comically Serious: Hawke is even more so in this one, especially after finding out that Andy's with them.
  • Flanderization: Andy's idiocy has been turned up. Not only is he still unaware of what an airport is, he has no idea that he's allying himself with Flak, a Commander who personally attacked his country in the second game. He's also very impressed with Flak's quirky tactics as well. He's not even aware he's causing trouble either.
  • Hero Antagonist: The whole game is precipitated by the Orange Star COs attacking Andy to end his incompetence, which leads to the other three Allied Nations getting drawn into the silly conflict.
  • Mission Control Is Off Its Meds: Hachi's "help" throughout the campaign is generally not helpful. While he does provide the occasional helpful piece of advice (such as warning you about a hidden artillery in a Fog of War map), most of his advice is either Schmuck Bait (Such as in Battleship Woes he tells you to rush the enemy HQ with your tank, when it would be better to send two mechs and have the tank defend your base or in Unfair Map where he tells you to (again) rush an objective, leaving out that said objective isn't an Instant-Win Condition) or outright impossible to complete (In Foreign Airport, he tells you to capture airports that are on islands in a level where you only have access to land units) Makes sense considering he's the real villain of the campaign.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Indirect Bombersnote
    • Battleship in the lakenote
  • No-Respect Guy: Nell and Sami are for the idea for defeating Andy, with Max going after after she tells him how dumb he is. However, Andy's too dumb to realize the Orange Star Commanders are really plotting to kill him.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Andy working with Black Hole Commanders while attacking Blue Moon, Yellow Comet, and Green Earth? Yeah, not even the other Black Hole Commanders really know what's up with this either. Kanbei also refuses to listen to Sonja after she finds out, but Kanbei doesn't really listen anyways.
  • Shout-Out: There are numerous shout-outs to the older Famicom Wars games plus various quirky dialogue from the second game.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Adder was always the most scorned and pathetic villain to the fanbase in the original game, such as in Paul.Power's Let's Play where he was utterly roasted. But he shows vastly more competence in this mod. This just applies to his campaign personality; his CO characteristics in gameplay are the same.
  • Villain Episode: Other than Andy, the other playable characters in the campaign are Black Hole commanders.
