Adiboo: Magical Playland (originally called Adibou 2) is a French Edutainment Game produced by Coktel Vision and published by Knowledge Adventure in 1996. The game is marketed toward young children, much like the other games in the series.
Adiboo: Magical Playland contains examples of:
- Animate Inanimate Object: There are several sentient objects, including a radio, a swing and a ball.
- Amplified Animal Aptitude: All the animal characters display human-like intelligence. One of the birds even blows you a kiss if you've been feeding them a lot.
- Animal Lover: Subverted. The title character likes feeding birds and has a pet dog, but also enjoys torturing the fish in the pond for shits and giggles.
- Assuming the Audience's Age: No matter what birth date you put in at the beginning of the game, Adiboo treats you as a playmate.
- Barely-Changed Dub Name: Most characters' English names are similar to their original French names.
- Adiboo is originally called Adibou.
- Pup is originally called Plop.
- Buzzy Galump is originally called Bouzzy Gouloum.
- Robbytock is originally called Robitoc.
- Canine Confusion: You can make Pup sick by putting certain ingredients in the cake, but chocolate isn't an ingredient that makes him sick.
- Captain Obvious: If he receives a letter in the mailbox that shows an animation of Buzzy Galump's stealing honey from the beehive, Adiboo tells the player "this has Buzzy Galump written all over it".
- Cartoon Dog Breed: Pup is a "suction cup dog," which is definitely not a breed that exists in real life.
- Cats Are Mean: A stray cat sometimes tries to attack the birds.
- Civilized Animal: Pup can grab things with his hands, open the door to Adiboo's house, and every cake you make for him is wrapped up like a present. He still enjoys normal dog things like playing fetch with his owner and chewing on his bone, and he sleeps in a dog house.
- A Dog Named "Dog": Adiboo's dog is named Pup.
- Edutainment Game: The game teaches lessons in gardening, reading, and singing.
- Evil Laugh: Buzzy Galump laughs evilly whenever he succeeds.
- Faceship: More like face house. Adiboo's house is shaped like his head.
- Fire-Breathing Diner: If Buzzy Galump eats a failed meal, he'll breath fire.
- Flat Character: Pup does not have much of a personality. Although he is just a dog.
- Game Within a Game: You can play minigames in Adiboo's house.
- Heroes Love Dogs: One of the characters is Adiboo's pet dog, Pup.
- Holiday Mode: If you play the game around Christmas time, there will be Christmas decorations on top of Adiboo's house.
- Jet Pack: Robbytock can turn his legs into propulsors.
- Magic Wand: Kicook and Robbytock sometime use magic wands to help themselves in their tasks.
- Magitek: Kicook is said to be a magical robot, which isn't really misplaced in an Edutainment Game with toon physics.
- Meaningful Name:
- Pup's original name is "Plop" and he's a "suction cup dog". "Plop" is the sound a suction cup makes when you un-stuck it from a surface.
- Kicook the robot is a cook.
- Nearly Normal Animal: In contrast to Adiboo's pet dog Pup, who has human-like hands and a suction cup-shaped leg, the bees, birds, cat, and fish are almost completely non-anthropomorphic.
- No Fourth Wall: The characters always talk to the player.
- Pale Females, Dark Males: Both birds are blue, but the male bird is dark blue while his mate is light blue.
- Perfectly Cromulent Word: If the player clicks on the swing, it will grow a face and say "Akalibada".
- Pointy Ears: Adiboo has pointy ears.
- Primary-Color Champion: Adiboo has yellow-ish skin, blond hair and wears red and blue clothes.
- Protagonist Title: Adiboo is the hero and his name is in the title.
- Ridiculously Human Robot: Robbytock is a robot who can blink, garden, and talk.
- Rubber-Forehead Aliens: Adiboo is an alien who looks like a normal human aside from the Pointy Ears and yellow-ish skin.
- Shout-Out: There are at least two Tintin references:
- In the original French game, one name Adiboo suggests for Buzzy Galump is "Bachi Boulouk", which is taken from one of Captain Haddock's insults: bachi bouzouk. Adiboo then says that this name isn't really good and that it reminds him of something.
- One element the player can place in the drawing minigame is a rocket ship with a red and white squares color pattern, just like Professor Calculus's rocket ship.
- The Speechless: Pup the Dog, Buzzy Galump, and the smiling tree never speak.
- Still Sucks Thumb: Buzzy Galump is introduced sucking his thumb, which makes Adiboo realize maybe the monster isn't so scary after all.
- Sudden Anatomy: The swing and the ball look like normal objects at first glance, but they can temporarily grow faces when interacted with.
- Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: The female bird has eyelashes.
- Time Skip: There isn't really any transition from day to night. It just suddenly gets dark and Adiboo goes to sleep, and you can't do anything other than click to make it day again.
- The Trees Have Faces: One of the trees has a human-like laughing face.
- Weaksauce Weakness: Buzzy Galump hates water.
