Yamata-no-Orochi

A giant serpent with eight heads and tails. According to myth, it first appeared in Izumo (modern-day Shimane prefecture). A powerful hero defeated it, but at some point thereafter it appeared in Lake Biwa. Its appearance is reminiscent of a dragon, and it is feared as a symbol of destruction.
