Penn's Treaty with the Indians, by Benjamin West

The Delaware Indians (also known as the Lenape) lived along the Delaware River before being pushed out by European settlers.

They were the first tribe to sign a treaty with the new United States, in 1778, and agreed to provide the U.S. with scouts.

Because of this, Indian scouts working for the US Army were heavily associated with the Delaware. In fiction it is not uncommon to refer to a US Army Indian scout as "a Delaware."
