Somaliland (Arabic: صوماليلاند‎ Ṣūmālīlānd, أرض الصومال Arḍ aṣ-Ṣūmāl), officially the Republic of Somaliland (Somali: Jamhuuriyadda Somaliland; Arabic: جمهورية صوماليلاند‎ Jumhūrīyat Ṣūmālīlānd) is a breakaway country in East Africa with a population of 3.5 million. It is de facto an independent country, but the international world recognizes it as an autonomous region of Somalia.

Formerly known as British Somaliland, the country was given independence in June 26, 1960 as the State of Somaliland, though this did not last long, as it and the Trust Territory of Somaliland (formerly Italian Somaliland) united to form the Somali Republic. The country remained as part of Somalia until the collapse of then-dictator Siad Barre's government in 1991. Before that, it was the site of a nasty massacre against the Isaaq (the dominant Somali clan in the north), which combined with the general lawlessness of the Civil War era caused the regional politicians of Somaliland, led by Abdirahman Ahmed Ali Tuur, to hold a conference in Burao between 27 April 1991 and 15 May 1991. The conference declared Somaliland independent. It currently disputes some areas in the east with Puntland, which although an autonomous region is not vying for independence.

The country has since been carrying on by itself while the rest of Somalia continues to crumble. It has an unbroken democratic government, with a largely peaceful transition of power between the presidents since 1991. Law is upheld and the police oversees the entire territory, so it is undoubtedly the safest region in Somalia. However, Somaliland has not received recognition from any other country, for fear of setting off a precedent for breakaway territories of Africa. This severely limits economy and trade, and makes life considerably difficult for most Somalilanders.

This flag is a tricolor consisting of pan-Arab colors: green, with the Shahada

inscribed in the stripe, white, which represents the peace achieved after the war, and red, which stands for the blood that had to be spilled for independence, with a black 5-pointed star charged on the white stripe. Because the Shahada is sacred, as with Saudi Arabia's flag, the flag has strict rules regarding usage: it is never flown half-mast and the writing is always written with a right-to-left orientation in both sides.
