Portmeirion is a quaint little Welsh village, built in an Italianate style between 1925 and 1975. Although nice enough in itself, being situated by the sea with some very pretty architecture, it's become widely known as the set of many TV shows and other bits of fiction. These include, but are in no way limited to:
- The Prisoner (1967)
- Danger Man: the episode "View from the Villa"
- Doctor Who: the story "The Masque Of Mandragora"
- Citizen Smith
- Llan-ar-goll-en
- Gigglebiz
- The Laughing Prisoner
- Cold Feet
- The Supergrass video "Alright"
- XTC's songs "The Meeting Place" and "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul"
- The Siouxsie and the Banshees video "the Passenger"
- One episode of 2point4 Children
- The Doctor Syn ("The Scarecrow") novel The Amazing Quest of Doctor Syn has scenes anachronistically set in Portmeirion. It's set in the 1780s, nearly 150 years before Portmeirion was built.
Many of these examples which were filmed after The Prisoner use the village as a Stock Shout-Out to that show.
Outside of television, it's also known for being where Blithe Spirit was written. Bertrand Russell was a friend of Clough Williams-Ellis, the designer of the village, and held several conferences there.
