A&W is a chain of fast-food restaurants. The restaurant was founded in 1923 by Roy Allen and Frank Wright, the inventors of root beer. They used the restaurants as a way to accompany their drink. The restaurants base their interior and vibe on the nostalgia from their earlier years. The root beer itself is served in "frosty mugs", which are kept cold until customers order it.

While both the American and Canadian restaurant chains share similarities, the Canadian version is much bigger and better known than the American one. The Canadian one retains most of its elements from the chain's 1960s years, has significantly more locations, and has a more loyal fan base. The American one is almost entirely obscure and has spent most of its time licking its own wounds while the Canadian one rocks the country.

The menu features "Burger Family", which comprises Papa, Mama, Teen, and Baby burgers. But since the 1990s, the American chain has only the Papa Burger while the Canadian chain retains the entire Burger Family.

The only other international location is in Southeast Asia, as root beer is not available anywhere else in the world than the United States and Canada. That makes this the only other location for the American chain.
