Awesome, Dear Boy: Alain Delon expressed his interest of starring in yet another swashbuckler after immensely enjoying his previous role in the film adaptation of The Black Tulip nearly a decade prior. Both movies had Delon playing a black-clad Robin Hood-esque masked crusader who fights against oppressive authorities and becomes a symbol for oppressed citizens, as well as having plenty of sword fights.
California Doubling: The film is set in Spanish California, but was entirely filmed in Colmenar Viejo, 30 kilometers North of Madrid, in Spain.
Fake Nationality: French actor Alain Delon as the Spaniard-Californian Diego. His nemesis Colonel Huerta is played by Welshman Stanley Baker. Most of the other actors are Italian.
