  • Henderson was an elementary school teacher for most of her life, and many of her stories deal with the relationship between a teacher and her young students.
  • She also lived her entire life in Tucson, Arizona, and clearly loved it. Many of her stories are set in the American Southwest, where the scenery and even the scents of the desert are vividly described. She spent WWII teaching in Japanese internment camps.
