- Cast the Runner-Up: Taryn Manning auditioned for the role of Astrid and got the small role of Niki (a fellow foster child in the final foster home).
- Dark Horse Casting: Alison Lohman was a complete unknown, having only done small supporting roles and short lived TV shows like Tucker and Pasadena. She was selected out of four-hundred auditionees to play the lead.
- Dawson Casting: In the film, Astrid goes from 15 to 18, and was played by then 22 year old Alison Lohman. Given that the character gets involved with an adult man and has sex, casting an older actress was necessary.
- Deleted Role: Stephen Root (better known as Milton from Office Space) filmed at least one scene as Michael, the upstairs neighbor of Ingrid and Astrid who tells Astrid what DMSO is, but his scene(s) were left out of the final cut of the film.
- Real Life Writes the Hairstyle: Alison Lohman wore wigs throughout the film because she had shaved her head to play a cancer patient in the film Dragonfly.
