  • Actor-Shared Background: Mikhail Baryshnikov was a Soviet defector (from Latvia in 1974), just like his character. He's basically playing himself. Just like Gregory Hines was a legendary tap dancer, just like his character.
  • Breakout Pop Hit: Lionel Richie's "Say You Say Me" won an Oscar and far eclipsed the movie in popularity. "Separate Lives" by Phil Collins has also endured.
  • California Doubling: The movie is set in the USSR, but filmed in Finland. Not just because the USSR wouldn't allow them to film there but because Baryshnikov himself could not safely enter the country, having defected in 1974.
  • Friendship on the Set: Baryshnikov and Hines hit it off and during filming, often talked about their admiration for the other's dancing skills and appreciation of how difficult their different styles were.
  • In Memoriam: The movie was dedicated to Mary E. Hackford (director Taylor Hackford's mom) and Jerry Benjamin (executive supervisor Stuart Benjamin's dad).
  • Romance on the Set: Helen Mirren and Taylor Hackford met and fell in love shortly after filming wrapped. They have been married since 1997.
  • The movie title "White Nights" refers to strange climate conditions near the arctic circle, how full sunset doesn't occur near the arctic circle during the height of summer. Arctic summer nights are "white" without a night sky, another phrase for this is "Midnight Sun".
