• Box Office Bomb: Budget, $30 million. Box office, $14,615,099.
• Hostility on the Set: Gene Hackman and director Donald Petrie did not get along at all. According to some on set, at one point during filming Gene even told him "Will you just shut the fuck up and go over there and say 'action' or whatever it is you do?".
• Star-Derailing Role:
  • This was Ray Romano's attempted transition from television to film stardom as Everybody Loves Raymond came to a close. Its failure killed his movie stardom before it began, as he's only made a handful of (mostly supporting) live action appearances in movies since. Between Romano's continued success in television and the Ice Age franchise, though, his career in general ultimately survived.
  • Gene Hackman is said to have hated the film so much that it caused him to retire. While not fond of the movie, Hackman insists that he made his decision because his doctor had diagnosed him with a heart condition and that his retirement was driven by health concerns rather than the movie.
• What Could Have Been: Dustin Hoffman was originally considered for Monroe Cole.
