- Actor Allusion: Veronica tells the tattooed man that she once met Eric Cantona. Cate Blanchett had starred with Eric in Elizabeth.
- Executive Meddling: Subverted. The Irish censors released the film with a 15-rating and outright admitted that if it had been complete fiction, it would have been given a much higher rating.
- Fake Irish: Australian Cate Blanchett in the title role. Her accent is quite decent and avoids slipping into Oireland territory.
- Germans Love David Hasselhoff: A very specific example. The film was apparently very popular at a prison in Portlaoise, and was being screened once a month at the request of a lot of prisoners.
- Throw It In!:
- Composer Harry Gregson Williams heard a boy called Brian O'Donnell busking on the street when he arrived in Dublin to spend a few days on the set. He ended up recording the boy singing "Fields of Athenry" acapella and scored his own music around it.
- Cate Blanchett improvised Veronica dancing with her family to "Everlasting Love".
- What Could Have Been: Jodie Foster was in talks to play the lead. Joan Allen was also previously attached.
