Trivia / Vera

  • Adored by the Network: Missed an episode of Vera? Don't worry, ITV will likely re-air one on their main channel when they have a two hour gap that needs filling in (unless they use an episode of Midsomer Murders instead), or on their repeat channel ITV3 - which will show every episode ever made at least four times a year.
  • Breaking News Interruption: An Australian broadcast of a seventh season episodenote  was interrupted by coverage of Prince Phillip's death.
  • California Doubling: Although the show is mostly filmed where it is set (Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear), occasionally other parts of Northern England and Scotland will be used for filming instead. Examples include the pub in "Blood Will Tell" (North Yorkshire) and the harbour used in "Parent Not Expected" (Eyemouth, Berwickshire).
  • Channel Hop: In North America, distribution is split between Acorn (Seasons 1, 2, 6, and 7), Hoopla (1, 2, 4, 5, 6), and Britbox (the remainder).
  • Dawson Casting: Although it is never stated how old Vera is meant to be, it's a fair bet that she is probably meant to be at least twenty years younger than Brenda Blethyn (born 1946) who plays her, since the age for police retirement in the UK is, depending on rank, somewhere between 55 - 65.
  • Directed by Cast Member: Admittedly, he had already left the show by that point, but David Leon, who played DS Joe Ashworth, ended up directing a few episodes in later series.
  • Follow the Leader: The success of Vera is probably what gave The BBC the confidence give the go ahead for one of Ann Cleeves' other detectives, DI Jimmy Perez, to be adapted for TV. The result was Shetland. The success of that then resulted in ITV commissioning another of Cleeves' detective characters, DI Matthew Venn, for TV as well, which led to The Long Call.
  • Throw It In!: The scene in "Parent Not Expected", where Vera and Aiden are in her Land Rover arguing about mushy peas and chips was ad-libbed.
