  • No Budget: A somewhat zig-zagged example, as the film ultimately had a $1M total budget, which is rather more than usual for an Australian indie film with no studio or government backing. However, that money came almost entirely out of the Spierig brothers' own pockets, involving numerous loans and credit cards, and a huge amount of cost-cutting measures were implemented, such as the example below regarding the sets and using Marion's van in the film as the actual production van. The brothers did the VFX work themselves (on regular consumer systems, no less), which saved a huge chunk, and called in numerous favours to help get the film finished. Additionally, the film had a very fast production schedule, with no more than one or two takes of each scene being filmed. This reached its apex with the crash scene involving the aforementioned van; because it was the only van they had, they shot the crash at the very end of production and literally had one chance to get it right, as there was no money to do it again.
  • Recycled Set: Much of the film's sets were from commercials that the Spierig brothers had directed in the past, taking whatever bits of set that they were able to get their hands on.
  • Throw It In!:
    • Wayne's reaction to Marion drawing his pistols in the convenience store fight was an ad-lib by the actor. Initially, the directors didn't want to keep the line but relented after seeing the massive laugh it got from the test screening audience.
    • Practically all of the Cluster F-Bomb-laden dialogue that Harrison spouts in the film was improvised.
