  • What Could Have Been: The game was originally called "Echoes of Eridu".
    • Early builds conveyed a slightly darker tone and story, as well as different backstories for the protagonists. Nina was established through the Kickstarter and early lore pages to be a cow scientist who lost her family and turned herself into a cyborg to fight, while Ace was a mysterious Blood Knight who saw the robot uprising as a chance to keep doing what he does best.
    • The game's visual style was different, with more detailed tiles, less use of color and more angular designs for Nina and Ace. The art style itself was also more realistic, as compared to the cartoonier aesthetic used in the final product.
    • Nina's design was changed drastically for a brief period of time during Early Access, with her sporting long hair, a helmetless look, and a partly-shaved head, but fan outcry changed her design again into its final appearance.
    • The level currently known as Skytemple was originally Eridu, the final level in earlier versions of the game, with Kur being an endgame boss. It was eventually tweaked to be part of the regular level set, with the Station taking its place.
    • Chris King has said in a Reddit AMA that he always wanted Nina and Ace in some way to be completely distinct from each other, on top of there being 8 level themes instead of 4, but neither were in scope for the game, leading to them being implemented in 30XX.
