• One-Book Author: Arthur Sullivan's brother Fred created the role of the Learned Judge and was, by all accounts, hilarious, even though his training had not been in music but in architecture. Sadly, any attempt to further his career on the stage was cut short by tuberculosis; Arthur wrote the ballad The Lost Chord at Fred's bedside.
• Write What You Know: Gilbert was a barrister (albeit an unsuccessful one) and knew all about the law and legal procedure, so it's natural that he would write an early work about a trial.
