  • This novel has been banned in China for its less than pleasant (but still extremely realistic) description of life as a villager in Red China.
  • Zhang Yimou's The Film of the Book was also banned for the critical portrayal of various policies and campaigns of the Communist government. He was also banned from making any films for three years.
