Trivia / Tinashe

Go To

  • Acclaimed Flop: Tinashe is certainly not an unknown artist but her work is continuously ignored or belittled by the greater R&B fanbase. Her song "2 On" was a big hit early on in her career but all her later works since then have been a series of Acclaimed Flops. Part of this is due to her former record label stifling her creativity, another part is that her image is torn between being an indie musician and pop star which makes her hard to market, and the last part can be attributed to her colorism controversy (see the Never Live It Down entry on her YMMV page).
    • Aquarius received very positive reviews and was featured on a number of year-end best lists for 2014, but despite its lead single "2 On" being a hit it had unremarkable sales and didn't produce any other charting songs.
    • Nightride was hit even harder with this. It also was well-received by fans and reviewers, but sold poorly and also didn't have any charting singles.
    • Most of her new songs since going independent find it difficult to even breaks a million views on her YouTube channel — and this is despite her newer albums being the most critically acclaimed of her career. A Pitchfork Media critic even said Tinashe's 333 was his "favorite album of the year" and this is Pitchfork we are talking about.
  • Black Sheep Hit: "2 On", her only hit song, is a DJ Mustard-produced club banger about the joys of getting drunk and high, in contrast the majority of her discography which is dark, mid-tempo R&B.
  • Development Hell: Joyride appears to have suffered from this, as it experienced almost three years of delays, and several of the promotional singles intended for the album note  weren't included. note  The album was finally released in April 2018, after being announced in 2015. During that time Tinashe released a different full-length album (Nightride) that was meant to keep fans satisfied while waiting for Joyride, and also features tracks note  that were meant for that album. Executive Meddling seems to be to blame.
  • Executive Meddling: Besides the issues with Joyride's release (see Development Hell above):
    • Tinashe has stated that her collaboration with Chris Brown, "Player" was her label's idea and that she didn't want to work with him.
    • She also apparently didn't want to release "Flame" and cried when her label forced her to.
  • Follow-Up Failure: Sadly, Nightride and Joyride have suffered from this compared to Aquarius, which was itself an Acclaimed Flop. They debuted at #89 and #58 on the Billboard 200 compared to Aquarius which reached #17, and none of their songs have made it to the Hot 100. Some have attributed this to her label RCA failing to promote her enough.
  • One-Hit Wonder: "2 On" peaked at #24 in the US and was certified platinum, but she hasn't had a charting song as a lead artist since.
  • Promoted Fanboy:
    • Is a huge Janet Jackson fan and has cited her as an influence in her music. She was one of the performers in a Janet Jackson tribute at the 2015 BET Awards, after being picked by Jackson herself.
    • Also a big fan of Britney Spears, and collaborated with her for the single release of Spears' song "Slumber Party".
